South Square Centre is an arts, heritage and community centre in the heart of Thornton Village, Bradford, housed in former workers cottages. South Square is home to 3 exhibition spaces, 14 affordable studio spaces, a local history archive, framers, café and bar and community garden. The centre hosts community events for all ages, including an ongoing workshop & outreach programme.
Over the last 5 years South Square has undergone a transformation, raising £1.3m to renovate our Grade II listed building, triggering a community asset transfer of the building, delivering a 3-year NLHF-funded heritage activity programme, improved outreach activities, and footfall have increased to 31,000 per annum.
South Square Centre believes in making change through creativity:
· We believe that culture can support positive changes in local communities on an individual and collective level.
· We believe that communities should be curious, creative and inspiring. We foster deep connections with audiences and lead with communities' desires at the heart of our decision making.
· We believe in providing access to creative opportunities for any person at any stage in their creative journey.
Bradford is UK City of Culture 2025, and with this the centre has been undertaking a 2-year Arts & Heritage project, led by Bradford Arts Centre and funded by the Cultural Development Fund, administered through Arts Council England. This outreach programme has enabled us to reach into neighbouring communities and empower local people to explore their heritage through creativity.
We are looking for a Freelance Fundraiser to support South Square Centre in its ambition to extend our currently funded outreach programme and raise core funds to sustain and grow our team capacity.
Our fundraising strategy covers a mixture of asks to strategic funders (over £25k) who we have had previous success with (NLHF, ACE, Garfield Weston Foundation) and smaller Trusts & Foundations. We are in receipt of some regular confirmed funding from local authority.
We are looking for a freelance fundraiser who can support the centre flexibly, bid-writing several applications across the next 6 months as well a supporting the centre staff to identify and complete smaller project-based trusts & foundations bids. Some work on longer-term strategy may also be explored.
The centre is based in Bradford, West Yorkshire but freelance fundraisers are not required to be locally based. Please see our website for further details of our programmes;
