Job overview
We are looking to recruit a highly motivated Community Occupational Therapist to join our Therapy team in South Cumbria on a temporary basis until 30/6/25 to support the delivery of therapy into community and intermediate care beds. You will be joining the team at an exciting time as we are in the process of integrating discharge to assess, supported discharge and community therapy services to form a wider team based in the community setting to provide a comprehensive quality service for our service users.
We are a multi-disciplinary team of Community Occupational Therapists, Community Physiotherapists, Assistant Practitioners and Therapy Assistants based from WGH in Kendal.
Working closely with the Integrated Care Communities, local GP's, Adult Social Care, Rapid Response teams and hospital discharge teams we provide rehabilitation and admission avoidance within patients own homes or care settings and CHC assessments, supporting people with a wide variety of conditions including frailty and falls, amputees, neurological conditions, orthopaedics and long term conditions.
We support under-graduate clinical education to occupational therapy students on placement from the local universities.
The service hours are Monday - Friday 8am - 630pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am - 5pm
Main duties of the job
Working independently as an autonomous practitioner supporting occupational therapy pathways, providing therapeutic assessment, diagnosis, treatment and being responsible for managing a caseload of patients with a range of frequently complex conditions.
To regularly assist in the planning & delivery of team and departmental training and education sessions, to further professional and personal development for staff, working with the guidance and support of senior members of staff if required
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.
The team delivers a 5 day service Monday to Friday. You will be expected to be able to travel across south Cumbria and be flexible for the needs of the service with some expectation to work across traditional boundaries. A broad experience of delivering rehabilitation is advantageous.
In addition to a comprehensive induction package we offer Team support, staff supervision and in-service training opportunities.

Person specification
Education and Qualification
* Health and Care Professions Council registered OT
* Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy approved by the Royal College of OT, UK
* Post graduate training or experience to post graduate diploma level or equivalent
* Full UK driving licence, or equivalent qualification.
* Experience of research or audit
* Membership of the British Association of Occupational Therapists.
* Accredited training in risk assessment and risk management. Practice placement educator accreditation
experience
* Relevant post registration experience as an OT to achieve knowledge and skills applicable to this post
* Experience of assessment and prescription of aids and adaptations.
* Experience as a supervisor of OT (Band 5) and/or OT support staff and/or OT students
* experience within community rehab setting
* Experience of caseload management and lone working as an autonomous practitioner.
Skills, ability and knowledge
* Transferable knowledge and skills at basic practitioner level with aptitude to develop to specialist OT practitioner level
* Assessment, observation, evaluation and reporting skills
* Ability to analyse professional and ethical issues
* Effective personal organisational skills to manage own workload and to determine priorities to support delivery of the OT service
* Applied knowledge of health and social care legislation and guidelines e.g. National service Frameworks (NSF’s) and National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for clinical conditions and application to OT practice.
* Ability to apply knowledge of the principles of clinical governance.
* Application of knowledge of Health & Safety and risk management policies and related procedures.
* Understanding of professional conduct and confidentiality
* Written and oral communication skills in English sufficient to communicate effectively with patients to gain consent and explain treatment interventions and gain information required for the patient’s medical/social history relevant to OT.
* Basic computer skills e.g. word processing, email and internet skills.
