Specialist Grade Doctor – Frays Ward
Hillingdon Mental Health Hospital
Fixed‑Term, 12 Months, Full‑Time 10 PAs
We are seeking a Specialist Grade Doctor for Frays Ward, Acute Service at Riverside Centre at Hillingdon Hospital who is looking to increase their experience in psychiatry.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Provide senior clinical decision‑making oversight of patients on Frays Ward, ensuring that decisions fully incorporate the risk assessments and clinical presentations of patients. Provide support and advice on alternative services should admission to Frays Ward not be required.
* Detailed clerking, history taking and initiation of all necessary investigations and assessments for patients, including physical health.
* Establish, initiate and evaluate treatment plans and risk assessments in collaboration with the multi‑disciplinary team and under the supervision of the Consultant Psychiatrist.
* Interview relatives and informal carers of patients as required.
* Undertake relevant referrals to other disciplines and services within the multi‑disciplinary team as well as to external services.
* Observe Trust and local policies and procedures, including those related to medicines management and physical healthcare.
* Prepare and present medico‑legal reports, including those for Managers’ hearings and Medical Health Review Tribunals for in‑patients.
* Complete full risk assessments of all in‑patients in conjunction with the MDT.
* Liaise with all external agencies as required.
* Be part of the 2nd on‑call rota (1 in 10) with attendance to the wards at weekends.
* Manage day‑to‑day clinical supervision of the junior doctor. Separate supervision requirements will be arranged by the covering consultant or supervised under the covering consultant’s oversight.
General Duties
* Review and advise on treatment plans and risk assessments as required for Frays Ward patients, in collaboration with the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Initiate and facilitate meetings with professionals and families as appropriate.
* Arrange safe transfers for each patient in a timely manner.
* Facilitate relevant referrals to mental health teams and other external services.
* Participate in MHA assessments.
* Adhere to Trust local policies and procedures, including those related to medication management and physical healthcare.
* Prepare medico‑legal reports should they be required for Frays Ward patients and support presentations to Managers’ hearings and Medical Health Review Tribunals.
* Complete full risk assessments for each patient in conjunction with the MDT on Frays Ward.
* Chair and supervise ward rounds and multi‑disciplinary team meetings.
* Support training of other team members, nursing colleagues, medical staff and students.
* Maintain accurate records of whiteboard meetings, ward rounds and other reviews relevant to this role.
* Participate in continuing professional development.
* Participate in annual appraisal in line with the Trust policy.
Ward Composition
* Frays Ward – 18 beds, Acute Ward – male
* Crane Ward – 18 beds, Acute Ward – female
* Colne Ward – 8 beds, PICU – male
* Acute wards provide service to patients aged 18 and over who are residents of the London Boroughs of Hillingdon; the Colne Ward is a Trust‑wide provision.
* A proportion of patients come from other boroughs under the CNWL services if no available beds are available at the time of admission.
* The nursing and medical teams are complemented by a range of therapy staff such as Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Sports Instructor and Peer Support Worker.
