Job Overview

Key Responsibilities

* Manage hyper‑acute stroke admissions, including local admissions, inpatient referrals and regional cases for mechanical thrombectomy and decompressive hemicraniectomy.
* Provide inpatient stroke care and rehabilitation.
* Lead the multidisciplinary team that includes stroke advanced care practitioners, nursing staff, specialist physiotherapy, occupational and speech & language therapy, orthoptists, and neuropsychology.
* Run or supervise daily TIA clinics and monthly stroke follow‑up clinics.
* Teach undergraduate medical students at the University of Southampton and postgraduate training, including weekly stroke journal club meetings and support for MRCP preparation.
* Participate in and support research, audit and clinical governance activities.


Essential Qualifications & Training

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* GMC registration with a licence to practise.
* Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems.
* MRCP or equivalent.


Desirable Qualifications & Training

* CCT in General (Internal) Medicine or similar medical specialty / geriatric medicine or in Neurology (or expected within 6 months of interview).
* CCT in Stroke.
* Research Qualification.
* Education/Training Qualification.


Aptitudes and Skills

* Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams.
* Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff.
* Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
* Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines.
* Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly.
* Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
* Experience or training in stroke/cerebrovascular disease.
* Experience of delivering thrombolysis.
* Participation in audit and clinical governance activity.
* Able to fulfil job description (involves some evening, weekend and overnight on call working).
* Ability to travel independently between sites.


Desirable Aptitudes and Skills

* Experience in delivering mechanical thrombectomy.
* Leading and managing a stroke service.
* Research Experience.
* Management skills.
* Teaching ability.
