About the Role - Assistant Head of Department - Construction & Building Services
Working alongside the Head of Department, you'll drive excellence across Study Programmes, Apprenticeships, and Adult courses. This leadership position combines strategic oversight with hands-on management, ensuring students receive the highest quality education that prepares them for successful careers in construction.
Key Responsibilities:
Academic Leadership:
1. Oversee curriculum development and delivery across Multi-Skills & Trowel Trades
2. Lead course team meetings and implement student-centered timetabling
3. Embed English & Maths throughout all programmes
4. Develop industry partnerships for work experience and curriculum relevance
5. Drive outstanding student outcomes and progression rates
Quality & Standards:
6. Lead quality assurance processes and performance improvement initiatives
7. Implement inclusive teaching practices and assessment methods
8. Monitor attendance, punctuality, and behaviour to meet college targets
9. Work with Excellence Coach teams to develop pedagogical excellence
10. Ensure compliance with awarding body requirements
Team Management:
11. Line manage lecturers, instructors, and technicians
12. Conduct appraisals and support professional development
13. Lead recruitment and induction of new staff members
14. Implement cover arrangements and resource planning
15. Foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture
Health & Safety Leadership:
16. Take full responsibility for departmental Health & Safety
17. Complete and maintain accurate risk assessments
18. Ensure safe learning environments across both campuses
What You'll Bring
Essential Qualifications:
19. Level 5+ teaching qualification (DET, DTLLS, Cert Ed, or PGCE)
20. IQA Award or equivalent (or working towards)
21. Construction qualification relevant to curriculum area
22. Enhanced DBS clearance
Essential Experience:
23. Extensive experience in education/training environments
24. Recent FE teaching experience in construction trades
25. Team leadership or supervisory experience
26. Proven track record of professional development
Key Skills:
27. Strong industry knowledge in Multi-Skills & Trowel Trades
28. Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
29. Proficient in Microsoft Office and educational software
30. Data analysis and performance improvement capabilities
31. Flexible, adaptable approach to change management
