Overview
The person appointed will be based at the Aintree site and will be a member of the Critical Care department within the Division of Surgery. Duties will be undertaken in conjunction with Consultant colleagues. The appointee will participate in the provision of 24 hour dedicated clinical cover for the critical care unit and participate in the Critical Care day time cover at 1 in 5 frequency, with on call rota at 1 in 16 basis (category A - 3% supplement) on a resident on-call basis. SPA Core SPA of 1.5 per week is for professional development, personal job planning, appraisal, mandatory training, attendance at regular team meetings with governance, and participation in audit, teaching and training. Additional SPA 1-2 per week for a specific role may be agreed. Second specialty options (DCC - 2 PAs of direct clinical care) may be supported alongside the Critical Care role. The Trust wishes to appoint a locum Consultant in Critical Care Medicine (Single or dual speciality, full time 10PA). The vacancy has arisen from the creation of a new position to improve the resilience of the service.
Responsibilities
* Provide 24/7 resident Consultant Intensivist cover for the Critical Care unit.
* Participate in Critical Care daytime cover and on-call duties as specified (1 in 5 daytime, 1 in 16 on-call with a 3% supplement).
* Work within a 31-bed unit (Level 2/3) with a fluid composition dependent on patient case-mix and daily needs.
* Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and allied services (Medical Microbiology, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Speech & Language Therapy, Dietetics) and regional partners.
* Engage in clinical governance, audit, teaching, training, and mandatory training as part of SPA and professional development.
* Participate in management and educational activities, including potential dual specialty arrangements and supervision roles as appropriate.
Qualifications
* Full GMC registration with licence to practice.
* On the Specialist register with the GMC, or within 6 months of eligibility at the time of interview.
* MBChB or equivalent.
* Appropriate higher-grade qualifications in ICM, Anaesthesia or other sub-specialty (e.g. FRCA, MRCP).
* Advanced (FICM stage 3) or equivalent competencies in ICM.
* CCT in ICM OR Established and current Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine.
* ALS and ATLS (or equivalent) accredited at the time of appointment.
Desirable criteria
* Post-graduate Diploma or equivalent in Intensive Care Medicine (e.g. FFICM).
* Teaching qualification.
* Evidence of achieving GMC standards to be recognised as an Education Supervisor; at least 12 months experience in ICU within the NHS.
* Experience in management of patients in ICU/HDU at senior level.
* Documented training in accredited Critical Care departments.
* Smooth progression through training compatible with personal circumstances.
* A basic working knowledge of NHS governance (clinical and financial).
* Ultrasound accreditation relevant to Critical Care.
* FICE accreditation; ability to work within a multi-professional and multi-disciplinary Critical Care framework.
* Management skills, leadership, and ability to prioritise workload.
* Evidence of clinical governance activity and audit/QI relevant to Critical Care.
* Evidence of organising or presenting educational or academic activities; willingness to participate in management activities.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients; capability to work under pressure.
* Evidence of achieving GMC standards to be recognised as a Clinical Supervisor.
* Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; simulation experience; presentations at recognised meetings; publications in peer-reviewed journals.
* Willingness to work flexibly and at other sites when required; willingness to undertake further training as necessary.
