Context
As part of the Systems Integration Team, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a variety of programmes and contribute to engineering excellence across the Energy Systems Catapult. Systems engineers bring a broad-based engineering skillset making them capable of understanding the requirements, design, implementation, and verification of whole system energy solutions.
The role is fundamental in translating customer needs and requirements into appropriate solutions. It requires the successful candidate to work in and/or manage multidisciplinary teams to develop system level solutions across a wide range of collaborative energy system projects that may include marine, offshore wind, and solar technologies, and address areas such as hydrogen, low carbon heating and transport. You will provide systems engineering expertise across all stages of the project lifecycle and be responsible for translating customer needs into acceptable system-level solutions. Such projects generally bring together a range of partner organisations that may include energy supply companies, network operators, system developers, device makers, academia, and government agencies.
Key Deliverables
* The Senior Consultant would provide technical leadership to large, complex projects (Whilst the Consultant would contribute to those projects and occasionally lead smaller projects), and be responsible for technical delivery by the project team and subcontractors, covering all aspects of project and engineering lifecycles.
* Analyse stakeholder needs to define and deliver suitable energy system solutions.
* Engage with stakeholders and project teams to implement systems and processes to ensure effective collaboration, ownership, communication, and management.
* Develop engineering best practices and processes (or support the implementation of best practices and processes for consultant level) to ensure engineering excellence and promote continuous improvement, whilst ensuring project targets and quality standards are always met.
Key Work Activities
* Determining and managing stakeholder needs and delivering energy system solutions using a consistent, sustainable best practice approach.
* Applying the fundamental concepts of systems thinking to systems engineering. These include understanding and communicating to others what the system is; its context within its environment; its boundaries and interfaces; and its lifecycle.
* Tailoring and applying systems engineering initiatives, best practices, and processes.
* Promoting a transdisciplinary and integrative approach to energy system project delivery to ensure effective collaboration, ownership, communication and management.
* Performing engineering design, development, modelling/simulation, analysis, and evaluation activities.
* Using Model-Based Systems Engineering techniques to develop SysML models.
* Producing high-quality reports, presentations, and summaries of engineering activities to internal and external audiences.
* Keeping up to date with the latest technical developments within energy systems and the wider engineering or systems practitioner sectors.
What credentials are we ideally looking for?
* Proven experience of managing (or contributing to for consultant level) the engineering development of complex technologies, systems, and solutions. This may be from any industry such as energy, aerospace, automotive, defence, rail, or building services for example.
* Proven experience of successfully working within a delivery focused environment, that is driven by a recognised project management approach (e.g. ISO 21500 or Agile methodology).
* A good understanding of the systems development lifecycle defined by ISO 15288, and experience of complex systems integration in a changing and challenging environment.
* Strong interpersonal and team working abilities, plus the credibility and communication skills to engage people at all levels and deliver under pressure.
* A positive attitude, open minded, respectful, and committed to building and maintaining relationships.
* A commitment to continuous improvement and sharing learning across the Energy Systems Catapult and wider community.
* Being motivated and capable of working on your own initiative to investigate and resolve problems.
* Ability to seek out risks, opportunities, assumptions, biases, and unintended consequences in complex situations.
* Comfortable dealing with uncertainty and ambiguity in project situations.
* Demonstrate curiosity by leading with questions rather than providing answers.
* Chartered Engineer (CEng), Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) or equivalent is desirable.
* Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approaches, SysML, and supporting tools such as Enterprise Architect is strongly desirable.
* Ability to articulate the concepts and principles of systems thinking is essential.
