SCPHN Health Visiting and School Nurse Student

If you are a registered nurse/midwife with a minimum of 12 months post qualified and want to take the next step in your career, do you have a passion for public health (Health Visiting and/or School Nursing) and want to make a difference? Then the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) training is an opportunity for you. As a SCPHN (HV or SN) with the Royal Free in Enfield, you can make an impact to Babies, Children and Young People, (BCYP) and their families. You will play a fundamental role in the practical implementation of the Healthy Child Programme, helping to prevent social exclusion, deprivation and tackling other important public health issues.

Main Duties of the Job

The fundamental responsibilities of the post holder are to attain the academic credentials and the clinical skills required to practice as a NMC registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse on a defined pathway (HV or SN). These are summarised below:

* Fulfil the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse programme requirements by attending university course dates and practice placement days in accordance with university regulations.
* Work with the Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor to develop the skills and competencies to achieve NMC Registration Standards for Specialist Community Practice.
* Link the theoretical knowledge gained through the university program to the practice situation.
* Demonstrate an understanding of current and emerging national, regional, and local healthcare legislation, policies, and guidelines relevant to the chosen pathway (HV or SN).
* Develop and manage priorities and workload, team leadership and management.
* Work within university regulations on academic work and student conduct.
* Work within employing organisation policies for clinical setting and employee responsibilities.

Its maternity, children, and adult services span a range of medical and surgical specialities and its adult and children’s emergency departments are among the busiest in London.

North Mid is also proud to offer one of the largest services in the UK dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of red cell haemoglobin conditions, including sickle cell disease and thalassaemia syndromes.

Specialist HIV, cardiology, radiotherapy and diabetes services can also be found at the hospital, alongside cancer diagnosis and treatment.


Job Details

Job Description Position: Student Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visiting and School Nursing) – choose either SCPHN Health Visiting or SCPHN School Nursing.

Tenure: Fixed Term (12 months)

Salary / Band: AFC Band 5 (inclusive of Outer London HCAS) — £36,943 to £44,900 per annum.

Location: Civic Centre, Silver Street, Enfield.

Hours: 37.5 per week.

Key Working Relationships:

* Health Visitors, School Nurses, Early Years Practitioners (Nursery Nurses), Health Visitor Assistants.
* Operational Support Team, School Nursing Team, Public Health, Safeguarding Team.
* Midwifery Community and Hospital, Neonatal Unit, GPs, Childrens Allied Health Professionals.
* Mental Health Services, Community Childrens Psychology Services, Children Centres, Children’s Social Care, Early Help Service, Early Years, Voluntary Agencies.

Job Summary: To gain the standards of proficiency for entry to the NMC register / recordable for Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) – Health Visitor or School Nurses.


Person Specification


Education and Qualification

* Current NMC Registration for nursing or midwifery.
* BSc (Hons) Nursing degree at level 6 or above (Mental health, Midwifery, Adult and or Children’s nursing).
* Evidence of continual professional development at level 6.


Knowledge

* Knowledge of the public health role of contemporary health visiting or school nursing and working in community settings.
* Knowledge of local and national policies influencing the provision of health visiting or school nursing.
* Current knowledge of safeguarding issues.
* Knowledge of quality issues, audit process and clinical governance.


Experience

* Completion of at least 12 months working in the capacity of nurse (community or hospital).
* Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams.
* Evidence of involvement in the management of difficult situations and conflict resolution.
* Experience of managing staff within a team.
* Evidence of working without direct supervision and managing own workload.


Skills and Abilities

* Academic ability to study independently at postgraduate level.
* Ability to be a reflective practitioner.
* Excellent adaptable communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Demonstrate ability to adapt to working within a changing environment.
* Demonstrate knowledge of research‑based practice.
* Evidence of supporting equality and valuing diversity in own practice.
* The ability to carry out the functions of the role safely for self and service users.
* Ability to support children and families and young people to make informed decisions about their health and well‑being.


Emotion and Self‑Awareness

* Able to adhere to the North Mid Trust Values: Caring, Open and Fair.


Other Requirements

* Ability to travel to a variety of sites within the Trust is essential.
* Car driving licence required (full UK driving licence). Vehicle for business use required for this post (insurance purposes).
