Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer/ Reader in Aerospace Materials and Structures

Job purpose

To carry out research and scholarship in the area of aerospace materials and structures, deliver an excellent student experience through teaching and assessment, and contribute to management and administration. At Grade 8 and 9, demonstrate leadership and contribute to academic and strategic management.


Main duties and responsibilities

* Pursue and deliver independent research proposals and/or collaborative research projects, project manage research activities, supervise and take responsibility for the research team. Secure external resources to support research, individually and/or jointly as appropriate.
* Develop an expert reputation in the field by disseminating and publishing research findings in leading journals and conferences; undertake knowledge exchange activities where appropriate.
* Enhance the research profile of the School/College by establishing and leading research collaborations within the University and with external partners nationally and internationally to keep research at the forefront of the field.
* Contribute to the effective management and administration of the College/School, including management of allocated resources and the wider organisation of the subject area.
* Carry out course administration within required timescales, ensuring effective communication of assessment requirements and criteria, and providing timely and constructive feedback on assessment.
* Develop approaches to enhance intellectual understanding and innovation in the field and support course delivery, organisation, feedback and assessment, including blended and/or online provision.
* Facilitate inclusive, evidence-based learning in face-to-face and potentially online formats such as tutorials, lectures and problem-based learning, promoting student participation and learning outcomes attainment.
* Develop working relationships with students and early career staff, providing academic leadership and specialist advice, and collaborating with student services to address diverse learning needs.
* Supervise undergraduate and Masters project work and supervise/postgraduate research students.
* Take on administrative or management roles within the subject/School as assigned by the Head of School.
* Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
* Undertake other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
* Contribute to enhancing the University's international profile in line with the Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World.


Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential qualifications and experience

* For appointment at Grade 7: A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD] or equivalent in a related discipline with growing reputation for scholarship; A2 developing national/international reputation aligned with Division activities.
* For appointment at Grade 9/Reader: A3 extensive and established reputation in research and/or teaching to develop new knowledge and understanding within the field.

Skills

* C1 Ability to develop an international research profile; C2 research creativity and cross-disciplinary collaboration; C3 excellent communication of complex data/concepts; C4 excellent interpersonal and collegiate approach; C5 workload/time/project/budget/people management; C6 extensive IT and data analysis skills; C7 strong team leadership and supervision; C8 commitment to high quality, research-led, student-centered teaching with pastoral care; C9 leadership to develop early career colleagues and manage a research team; C10 influencing and collaboration to shape research agendas; C11 exceptional commitment to high quality teaching and student learning.
* E1 relevant research experience including postdoctoral experience; E2 emerging track record of presentations/publications; E3 experience in independent research and funding applications; E4 strong record of teaching/delivery at undergraduate/PG level.

For appointment to higher grades the following criteria should also be met

* E5 for Grade 8: enhanced leadership and strategic management through internationally leading research and funding;
* E6 strong track record in research, high-impact publications, and external funding;
* E7 contribution to academic and administrative activities in a research-led institution;
* E8 for Grade 9: distinctive contribution to the academic community at national/international level (e.g., shaping research agendas, advising panels/funders);
* E9 for Grade 9/Reader: evidence of criteria to a higher degree in research outputs, funding, supervision and impact;
* E10 for Reader: excellence in research generation, outputs, funding, supervision and knowledge exchange/impact.


Further information

We are a research-intensive Engineering School with significant facilities and a broad portfolio of programmes. The School supports research across Aeronautical, Biomedical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical disciplines, and operates extensive laboratories and computing facilities. Standard terms and conditions

The salary is on the Research and Teaching Grade, level 7/8/9, with salary ranges per annum. The post is full-time and open-ended. The successful applicant will be enrolled in the University's Early Career Development Programme. New entrants may serve a probationary period of 6 months. The University offers a Superannuation Scheme and relocation assistance where appropriate.
