Overview

Scottish Refugee Council is committed to assisting and empowering refugees to rebuild their lives in Scotland and settle into the local areas and communities.

Our Client and Communities Services Directorate is responsible for providing direct advice to refugees and people seeking asylum on issues such as housing, benefits, finance, education, training and volunteering opportunities. We also make referrals and signpost to other specialist agencies as appropriate to the needs of service user. The Directorate includes distinct projects to support newly arrived asylum seeking families, people whose claims for asylum have been refused and people granted refugee status.

As a volunteer with this Directorate you will play a key role, working closely with advisers, in ensuring that people have access to accurate information and understand their rights and options in Scotland. You will be introduced to the work of all advice teams, but may be allocated to a specific team within the Directorate as you continue in your volunteer placement.


Role details

Time Commitment At least 1 day per week (Monday to Friday)

Responsible to Casework Volunteer Coordinators

Location 17 Renfield Street, Glasgow – office based role

This role is subject to a Disclosure Scotland check. To protect all our volunteers and service users.


Responsibilities

What will I be doing?

Duties will be dictated by people’s needs and in line with their agreed goals. You will get full guidance on a range of issues people may need your assistance with and how to act to address them. Tasks will vary, but will include:

* Providing basic advice on accessing rights and entitlements
* Helping people with a range of applications and referrals
* Linking people with key services, including communities and SRC services
* Gathering data to inform policy changes
* Recording data gathered on the case management system
* Administrative and research tasks associated with the role


Qualifications and skills

* Effective communication and listening skills
* A strong ability to show empathy with the needs of asylum seekers and refugees
* Ability to record information accurately and on time
* Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
* Reliability, punctuality and trustworthiness
* An understanding of Equal Opportunities
* An understanding of the importance of confidentiality
