The main responsibilities of a Higher Scientific Officer will be dependent on the work area they are assigned to and may include some of the following responsibilities in relation to habitats, species, geodiversity, land and seascapes, recreation in the countryside, water quality and quantity, water pollution, air quality and/or waste management/regulation, water regulation, the regulation of chemicals and industrial processes, and science policy.Please see employer website for full job details & person specification.
Responsibilities
* Lead, manage and motivate staff to ensure that agreed objectives are met
* Visit establishments and sites throughout Northern Ireland for meetings, site visits and to check compliance with legislative requirements
* Collaborate with internal and external partners to share knowledge and develop technical and scientific expertise
* Collate and process data submitted and/or collected for reporting needs and compliance assessments, including financial management of contracts, projects and grants
* Ensure the provision of appropriate evidence based scientific advice and guidance to colleagues, customers and stakeholders and briefing for external and internal correspondence
* Conduct fieldwork and site visits which may include, depending on the post, working over arduous terrain, within industrial sites, along watercourses, or boat work
* Assist with the preparation of responses to relevant enquiries and/or information requests e.g. FOI/EIR, Private Office/Ministerial queries, Assembly questions and press queries
* Develop and maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders
* Contribute to the regular review and development of work procedures and operational policy
* Compile administrative / business / legislative / finance returns
* Ensure personal and team compliance with the requirements of Departmental Health and Safety procedures and risk assessments
* Seek opportunities to develop and update specific technical and personal skills, knowledge and competencies required by the post
Skills and Qualifications
* Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant scientific discipline.
* At least one year’s post-graduate work experience in a paid or voluntary capacity, in a relevant scientific role.
* Or An HNC/HND qualification or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline A minimum of three year’s full time equivalent post-graduate practical work experience in a paid or voluntary capacity, in a relevant scientific role.
