About the role

As a registration officer you will contribute to the provision of a high-quality front line civil registration service to the residents of West Sussex and the wider public. Ensuring local community needs are met by performing duties in connection with the day‑to‑day administration and registration of Marriages and Civil Partnerships. Regular attendance at your base location will be necessary, with a degree of flexible working subject to business requirements. You will need to be able to travel independently around the county, including to areas that may not be easily accessible by public transport. Pool cars and pool bikes are available. This role involves working closely with the public, colleagues, and external stakeholders.


Responsibilities

* Interpret complex marriage and civil partnership legislation.
* Explain the legal requirements of statutory and non‑statutory ceremonies.
* Make bookings for notices and ceremonies over the phone.
* Answer enquiries from the general public over the phone.
* Respond to written requests for information/guidance.
* Take notices of intent from members of the public in face‑to‑face appointments at our offices in Crawley, Horsham, Worthing and Chichester.
* Prepare and check legal paperwork to enable a ceremony to go ahead.
* Receive training in and occasionally register & conduct ceremonies in WSCC ceremony rooms and licensed venues around the County; the majority of ceremonies are conducted at weekends by our sessional registrars.
* Register ceremonies on the online registration system.

Qualifications

* Degree, or equivalent qualification or experience, demonstrating a comparable level of applied knowledge in specific areas such as statutory legislation, frontline service, research, evaluating and accurately recording information.
* Sound and reliable IT proficiency, including Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn multiple service‑specific systems.
* Demonstrable evidence of contributing to a professional, effective and efficient service for a diverse range of clients and customers.
* Excellent literacy and numeracy skills to interpret and review statutory legislation, monitor and generate statistical data, and maintain accurate accounts.
* Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to anticipate issues, independently develop solutions and make well‑considered, pragmatic decisions that positively impact the service.
* Ability to deal with people at very emotional and sometimes challenging times in their lives while providing a warm and welcoming experience throughout the registration process.


Salary and Benefits

Salary: £29,540 to £32,061 per annum with entitlement to Saturday enhancement, working 1 in 4 Saturdays and Crawley Weighting Allowance.
