Job summary

This post is a replacement post. The successful candidate will be part of a clinical team of 2 medical consultants based at DGFT with the support of consultant clinical scientists employed by BCPS. The postholder will be expected to provide a comprehensive clinical service to support the tier 3 bariatric and lipid services offered from the Dudley site.

This is a full time replacement post (10.0 PAs) as a Consultant Chemical Pathologist with Metabolic Medicine. Suitably qualified candidates may be eligible for an honorary academic appointment with the University of Birmingham. Candidates who are unable for personal reasons to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Black Country Pathology Services (BCPS) provides a comprehensive pathology service to a population of approximately 1.76 million in the Black Country, South Staffordshire and West Birmingham. It is an opportunity for staff to be part of a world class service with the potential to innovate and expand the range of services, which in turn will benefit patients.

Main duties of the job

The consultant will provide expert support for the diagnosis and management of biochemical clinical problems and advice on appropriate investigations on an individual patient basis

The Consultant will provide advice to GP users either by telephone or by the e-mail advisory service

The Consultant will develop close collaborative links with clinicians in their area of expertise and work to develop services to patients in these areas to the highest standard, according to departmental protocols and Trust guidance. This will include development of diagnostic and, where appropriate, therapeutic protocols and guidelines

The Consultant will have direct clinical responsibilities for patients attending the Lipid and Weight Management Clinics

The Consultant will be responsible for the clinical care, the monitoring and investigations of patients who undergo bariatric surgery, following their discharge from the tertiary centre. This will include liaison with the surgeons at the tertiary centre, as and when required.

The Consultant will develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialities and participate in multidisciplinary meetings and other postgraduate meetings

The Consultant will take part in medical audit and research as appropriate

* Full and specialist registration with the GMC or eligible registration with 6 months of interview
* Full GMC registration with a current licence to practice

* on-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
