CPL UK are working alongside an NHS Trust in the east of England to recruit for a permanent GP to join their new Urgent Treatment Centre.

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a forward-thinking General Practitioner to play a major role in leading the development of a new and innovative system of integrated emergency care as the Trust launches it’s new Urgent Treatment Centre for the local population.

Duties include:

1. Providing clinical assessment, appropriate treatment and supervision of all types of patients attending the UTC until onward referral or discharge.
2. Provide clinical leadership and supervision for junior medical and nursing staff within the UTC.

This post requires someone who is dynamic, enjoys variety and challenge and interested in service development. You will have the opportunity to lead and shape a new service for the Trust, and work in a brand new facility for service launch.

Job Plan

The exact details of the successful applicant’s job plan will be agreed with the Lead Clinician and Divisional Director. The plan is based on hours or 10 PA’s per week ( Direct Clinical Care, plus SPA, however we less than full time would be considered as well and we welcome discussion with individual candidates about schedules that best suit their needs as well as those of the Trust.

Duties of the Post

The post holder will be responsible for delivery of high-quality urgent care.

The GP is required to provide highest clinical standards and will work in conjunction with the UTC Lead, Service Manager, Lead Practicioner and the nursing team to ensure effective overall performance of the UTC.

The appointee should be a team player with the ability to cope under pressure.

The appointee will be required to supervise junior medical and allied healthcare and to provide guidance to nursing staff of all grades

The appointee will promote a positive image of the Trust with appropriate professional groups and organisations as well as the local health economy.

The appointee will promote a positive and supportive atmosphere which encourages staff to innovate and to go beyond the call of duty in order to achieve key objectives. At the same time, the appointee will ensure staff recognition for exceptional service.

The appointee will help develop and promote UTC clinical guidelines in line with evidence-based best practice.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE GP

Clinical Duties

3. To provide triage where required
4. To provide complete consultations with assessment, treatment and management of patients of all ages presenting with primary care problems at the UTC
5. To record full clinical notes using the UTC IT systems
6. To complete coding requirements on the clinical record in line with the Trust requirements
7. To complete all admin work relating to consultations
8. To work as part of the wider clinical team- supporting Nurse Practitioners, HCAs, and GP colleagues and training Doctors
9. To manage referrals of UTC patients on to acute specialties, Emergency Department or community services where required
10. To support the redirection of patients to their registered GP where appropriate
11. To give education to patients on healthy living and disease prevention
12. To give education to patients on appropriate use of NHS services
13. To prescribe medicines in accordance with UTC formulary and dispense medicines from stock where available
14. To complete discharge letters for all patients seen in the UTC
15. To use all internal and external referral pathways for patients in the UTC
16. To adopt a reflective approach to clinical practice, to report all incidents and work with the team to investigate incidents
17. To prepare response for any complaints concerning his / her work
18. To follow the UTC child safeguarding and vulnerable adults policy
19. To restrict the use of diagnostics according to the specification of the UTCs
20. To maintain full registration with the GMC and have full medical liability insurance
21. Contribute to clinical audit activity where necessary
22. Attend team meetings and other meetings as necessary

Administrative Duties

23. Managerial duties as agreed with the Lead Clinician and Divisional Operational Manager.
24. Preparation of reports, plans, cases of need etc, to bid for future requirements of the department.
25. Co-operation with existing emergency staff and other medical services and administrative departments within the hospital and in other hospitals within and outside the local healthcare system.
26. Close communication with local General Practitioners about individual cases, the appropriate use of the department and any urgent problems. Liaison with outside agencies such as Police, Fire, Ambulance, District Nursing, Social Services etc, with regard to training, patient care and Major Incident Procedures.
27. Contribution to activities and development of the Clinical Management Team.
28. Provision of cover for GP colleagues’ periods of leave.
29. Professional supervision, appraisal and management of junior medical staff, as appropriate.
30. Responsibilities for carrying out teaching duties as required and for contributing to postgraduate training and continuing medical education activities.
31. Research activities consistent with the priorities of the trust, subject to the availability of funding and resources.
32. Participation in the rolling process of clinical governance
33. To undergo annual appraisal, as well as GMC revalidation.
34. Such additional duties as may be required from time to time, either by the Divisional Director or Medical Director after appropriate consultation.
