About the Role
TJX Europe is seeking a highly experienced and commercially minded lawyer to join the Commercial Team within the Legal Department in Watford, UK, as a Senior Attorney on a 6 month fixed term contract basis. This is a hands-on role supporting a broad range of commercial transactions and advisory work across TJX’s European business, as part of a collaborative and highly regarded legal team.
The Senior Attorney will work in close partnership with TJX’s European procurement team and advise business colleagues at all levels of the business, including the Senior Leadership Team. The Senior Attorney will be expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy, quickly integrate into a fast-paced in-house environment, and deliver pragmatic legal advice aligned to business objectives. This position will report to the Assistant Vice President of Commercial Legal in Europe.
Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality legal advice on a wide range of commercial matters across TJX Europe
- Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial contracts for the purchase of goods and services not for re-sale in support of all departments of the European business
- Partner closely with key stakeholders across multiple business functions, including in particular Procurement, Loss Prevention, Facilities Management, Store Operations, HR and Property
- Advise on legal risk in a practical, solutions-focused way that supports business delivery
- Support strategic projects and initiatives, often working to tight timelines
- Identify and manage legal risks, escalating where appropriate
- Advise on ad hoc legal issues arising within the course of business.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of legal processes, templates and ways of working
- Provide European contract support for US-led global transactions
- Manage external counsel in the UK and European jurisdictions as required
Qualifications
- Qualified lawyer (England & Wales or equivalent European or Commonwealth jurisdiction) with significant post-qualification experience
Required Skills
- Extensive background in commercial contracts and transactional work, ideally with experience within a retail business
- Proven experience working in-house (or with substantial secondment experience), with a clear understanding of the demands and pace of an in-house legal function
- Technically excellent, with strong drafting and negotiation skills
- Confident operating independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to get up to speed quickly and manage a varied workload from day one
- Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and build relationships across all levels of the business
- Commercially pragmatic, with a solutions-oriented mindset
- Highly organised, responsive and able to manage competing priorities effectively
