Overview
We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Senior or Principal Hydrologist to join our Sustainable Water Management team. This is an opportunity to lead and contribute to high-profile Water Industry Natural Environment Programme (WINEP) and Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP) projects across the UK. WSP is undertaking AMP8 WINEP projects for multiple high-profile UK water companies, with diverse geographic and environmental scope. We will also support water companies in developing hydrology for their WRMPs.
Responsibilities
* Lead and contribute to high-profile WINEP investigations and WRMP inputs, across recent AMP cycles.
* Develop rainfall–runoff models (e.g., GR6J) and apply sound model calibration techniques; understand broader hydrology approaches for water resources applications in England and Wales, including flow naturalisation/decomposition and reservoir mass balance modelling.
* Familiarity with demand management and water resources modelling approaches (e.g., Aquator, PyWR, MISER).
* Explain and apply UK water resources management regulations and guidance (e.g., Water Resources Planning Guidelines, WINEP guidance such as Preventing Deterioration and Environmental Destination).
* Assess climate-change resilience using UKCP18 and related data products.
* Supervise small hydrology teams, mentor junior colleagues, with opportunities for formal people management.
* Produce high-quality client and regulator-facing deliverables with attention to detail and quality assurance.
* Programming experience (Python and/or R) is advantageous; contribute to developing these skills.
* Communicate effectively in writing; produce concise, high-quality reports and collaborate with other sectors/disciplines.
Qualifications
* A water-focused MSc (e.g., hydrology & water resources, sustainable water management) and a BSc in a related subject (e.g., physical geography, earth sciences, geology, civil engineering).
* Current or near-term chartership with a relevant professional body.
