Open Spaces is a growing multidisciplinary practice, based near Chelmsford, specialising in landscape architecture, tree and ecology consultancy. Our projects range from small residential schemes to large-scale housing, commercial, and educational developments.
We are seeking an Ecologist to join our expanding team, working on a wide variety of projects from single dwellings to complex mixed-use developments. This position is ideal for an experienced ecologist who is (or is eligible to become) an Associate Member of CIEEM and is confident working independently on surveys, assessments, and reporting.
Key responsibilities
* Lead a range of ecological surveys and assessments (PEAs, UK Habs, protected species)
* Undertake Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) calculations using the DEFRA metric
* Prepare high-quality technical reports and mitigation plans
* Liaise with clients, planners, and statutory consultees
* Provide Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) services as required
Essential
* Associate CIEEM membership (or eligibility)
* Strong survey skills for at least one protected species group
* Good understanding of relevant UK legislation and planning policy
* Ability to manage projects to deadlines and budgets
* Strong written and spoken communication skills
* Full, clean UK driving licence and access to own transport
Desirable
* Protected species licence(s)
* GIS or CAD skills
