The Role
This operational role offers significant autonomy while working closely with members, clients, and a highly competent international team. You'll be at the forefront of marine claims handling, dealing with complex Hull & Machinery matters while supporting business development activities in the Americas market.
Key Responsibilities
Claims Management
* Handle incoming Hull & Machinery and Loss of Hire claims from initial notification through settlement
* Appoint and manage relationships with surveyors, lawyers, and specialist service providers
* Review and analyze survey reports, damage assessments, and technical documentation
* Provide expert advice to clients on repair strategies and cost-effective solutions
* Coordinate with claims adjusters on coverage interpretation and settlement negotiations
Client Relations & Business Development
* Maintain extensive contact with clients, brokers, and industry stakeholders
* Provide technical advice and guidance on all aspects of marine claims
* Support underwriting teams in marketing capabilities to Americas market clients
* Represent the company at industry events and client meetings
* Build and maintain strong professional relationships across the maritime community
Technical Expertise
* Handle complex maritime casualties including salvage operations, collisions, machinery breakdowns, and fire damage
* Collaborate with Loss Prevention department on risk mitigation initiatives
* Participate in industry seminars, training exercises, and knowledge-sharing activities
* Stay current with maritime technology developments and claims trends
* Contribute to internal best practice development and procedure refinement
Cross-Functional Collaboration
* Work closely with underwriting teams on risk assessment and portfolio management
* Support global colleagues on complex international claims
* Participate in cross-team initiatives and knowledge transfer programs
* Travel as required to support Americas market development and client relationships
What We're Looking For
Essential Experience
* Minimum 5 years marine insurance claims experience with focus on Hull & Machinery claims
* Maritime background preferred - nautical or marine engineering qualification with sea-going experience
* Alternative pathway: Significant marine claims experience can compensate for limited shipping background
* Strong understanding of marine insurance principles and coverage interpretation
* Experience managing complex casualty investigations and settlement processes
Technical Competencies
* Deep knowledge of Hull & Machinery claims procedures
* Understanding of marine casualty investigation processes
* Familiarity with salvage operations and emergency response
* Knowledge of marine repair processes and cost estimation
* Experience with international maritime law and jurisdiction issues
