Job description
About you:
We are seeking to recruit a proactive and experienced civil engineer with a strong background in delivering capital projects and asset management works. You will bring technical expertise in engineering and construction, along with a practical understanding of project delivery in a public sector context. Your strengths include stakeholder engagement, project and contract management, budget control, and risk management, and you’re comfortable overseeing both complex capital schemes and day-to-day operational support tasks.
You are confident in providing advice and technical oversight to colleagues and external contractors, producing and reviewing project briefs, specifications and RAMS, and ensuring that Quality and Health and safety and are at the heart of all activities. You understand the challenges and opportunities in managing public realm infrastructure, and you're passionate about shaping and maintaining the built environment for the benefit of communities.
About the role:
This role offers the opportunity to have a visible and lasting impact on the borough’s infrastructure and the communities that use it every day. As a Senior Engineer, you will be the technical expert in managing construction work, supporting the rest of the Engineering Team by offering oversight and advice on minor works projects, and reviewing and approving technical work for more junior members of the team. You will also play a key role in the strategic development of future projects, providing expert advice and input into long-term asset management planning.
You will lead the delivery of more complex engineering capital projects across the Council’s non-building assets including car parks, footways and roadways, bridges and structures, watercourses, and canal and harbour assets. Your role will be to manage the full lifecycle of capital improvement schemes – from developing business cases and briefs to stakeholder engagement, procurement, delivery and handover to the Cient service. You will be supported throughout the project by the other members of the Engineering team and the Council’s procurement, finance and legal teams.
About the team:
You’ll be joining the council’s Engineering Team and will report to the Engineering and Assets Manager. Working collaboratively with internal teams and external consultants, we ensure that infrastructure is safe, sustainable, and fit for the future. The Engineering team is directly responsible for the management and maintenance of non-highways street infrastructure, street furniture and watercourses, and inspecting and advising on the condition of the city’s non-building assets.
The team also provides advice, support and project management resource to other services. You will be working closely with other Council teams including the Parks & Green Spaces, Canal & Waterways Teams and Car Parks teams to deliver projects affecting their assets and delivering outcomes to support their service delivery.
