Main duties of the job

Responsible for the day-to-day management of Ophthalmology out-patient services provided by clinical staff and Ophthalmic nursing provision at an operational level.

Provide positive leadership within the Ophthalmic nursing team, which is flexible and responds to change.

Development of a team, which is motivated and empowered to contribute to the development and delivery of Ophthalmic services.

Development of a team where potential is recognised and development of skills and knowledge are encouraged in line with service and individual needs.

Presence of an enthusiastic dynamic and motivated role model, prompting delivery of best clinical practice providing safe clinical advice as required.

Understanding of operational pressures, waiting list targets, referral to treatment pathways, managing change and service improvement along with budgetary controls.

Improvement and maintenance of patient quality and delivery of service ensuring a focus to improve patient experience.

Job responsibilities

Responsibility for clinical leadership for all Ophthalmic nurses and Healthcare support workers.

Responsible for advancing clinical practice at all levels. Ensuring that clinical teams demonstrate best practice and guidelines are available and adhered to within the department.

Professional Duties

To work within Trust policy and procedure guidelines and ensure that these are adhered to by the team.

Work within codes of professional practice.

To facilitate and lead the team in a positive flexible and strategic manner.

Present a dynamic, innovative and enthusiastic role model, providing leadership guidance and advice on strategic, operational and professional issues.

To empower and motivate team members to maximise their knowledge, skills and expertise including Ophthalmic extended roles.

Devise, review and support the implementation of policies related to nursing clinical practice and patient care.

Managerial Duties - have experience in

leading and implementing workforce change

Can demonstrate a successful track record of improving team performance - implementing (and sustaining) programmes of improvement.

Setting objectives and processes for monitoring performance and delivery at team and individual level

Dealing with conflict and disagreement within teams

Effective influencer able to deliver persuasive arguments, maintain professional respect and acknowledging difference

familiar with HR policies and practices has supported staff through effective line management and good people practice

Participate in and support the implementation of service improvement and transformation projects within Ophthalmic services, nursing care and extended roles.

To assist in the prompt resolution of complaints. To participate in the investigation of incidents/complaints as required, including preparing detailed reports/letters to complainants.

Undertake Appraisals for Ophthalmic team members.

Lead on the recruitment and selection of staff in line with Trust policy.

Attend and participate in meetings as required including providing feedback and disseminating information as appropriate.

Utilise information systems to plan and forecast future needs and ensure appropriate action.

Monitor sickness, absence and competence issues, and implement Trust policies e.g. managing ill health, capability.

Ensure systems are in place for risk assessment and minimisation, including promoting a no blame culture in order that incidents and near misses are reported.


Person Specification


QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING

* Recognised healthcare professional qualification
* Evidence of postgraduate study and continuous professional development
* Formal leadership training, management qualification or working towards
* Recognised teaching qualification or working towards


KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

* Demonstrable experience in leading clinical teams in a secondary care or outpatient setting
* Experience in service development or quality improvement within a clinical environ-ment
* Experience in change management and implementing service improvements
* Understanding of governance, risk, and patient safety frameworks
* Familiarity with HR policies and procedures relevant to NHS or equivalent healthcare settings
* Ability to support and develop research skills and promote evidence-based practice
* Experience in using workforce planning, skill mix analysis and roster design to meet service demands
* Up-to-date knowledge of ophthalmic clinical practices, patient pathways, and national targets
* Ability to support and develop research skills and promote evidence-based practice


COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIPS (INCLUDING MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES)

* Ability to establish clear, positive, and credible leadership both professionally and managerially
* Ability to manage and resolve conflict constructively
* Demonstrated achievement in financial and business planning, budget management, and waiting list oversight
* Excellent communication skills - verbal and written
* Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
* Commitment to maintaining a learning environment and supporting development for all staff grades
* Inclusive and compassionate approach to team management
* Ability to influence and build professional relationships
* Line management experience, including supervision, appraisals, and performance management
* Experience in cross-site service management or coordination across multiple clinics
* Advanced knowledge of electronic patient record systems and data analysis tools
* Knowledge and understanding of writing business cases to support service development and transformation
