Civil Engineer – Black & Veatch

As a Civil Engineer you’ll join a dynamic and technically focused Civil Engineering team, taking a lead role in the engineering design of civil infrastructure for energy projects.
You’ll be key in the design and delivery of multiple Civil Engineering schemes throughout the EMEA region, supporting project delivery across multiple sectors including renewables (solar PV, BESS, hydrogen), data centres and conventional power generation (gas, waste‑to‑energy).
This role is based primarily in our Glasgow or London office 3 days per week, with the flexibility to work from home the rest of the week. For the first 3 months you will work from the office 5 days per week to help you settle in.
Travel and On‑site Requirements
* This is a primarily office based role, however there will be occasions when you are required to travel to site and client offices.
* For site development activities you will be required to visit site and lead site visits for short periods (typically one day), assessing the site in regard to constructability and design optimisation / optioneering.
* Black & Veatch often act as owner’s engineer for construction projects, where the site works are undertaken by others. For these projects regular (monthly) visits will be required.
* In addition to this, where Black & Veatch are also engaged as principal EPC contractor or involved in longer term construction projects, there will be opportunities to act as lead civil engineer onsite with medium and longer term site secondments. These secondments would be with plenty of advance notice and be eligible for additional compensation where appropriate. Such secondments and site visits are critical to the long‑term development of the candidate and Black & Veatch are keen to support their long‑term development in the field of Civil Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
* Take a lead role in site development activities, especially in the energy sector.
* Participate in technical discussions and make recommendations regarding site constructability and design.
* Design civil works including earthworks, roads, pavements, drainage and related infrastructure.
* Work alongside Senior Engineers to undertake feasibility studies, calculations, design, specifications and reports for various energy and power related projects.
* Apply recognised standards/codes of practice for civil design works.
* Develop engineering drawings including layouts, details & long‑sections.
* Co‑ordinate with the CAD team to deliver engineering drawings, reviewing and amending AutoCAD drawings accurately and efficiently according to the design brief.
* Possess knowledge of construction and constructability practices and principles.
* Design in accordance with Health & Safety legislation and regulations (e.g. CDM Regs).
* Report the status of projects to management regularly and accurately.
* Act as a key interface and manage relationships with clients and contractors.
* Add value, avoid/resolve issues, mitigate risks and manage project finances and contracts by applying robust project management practices.
* Serve as a point of contact within the UK team for interaction with other international B&V teams.
* Interface with UK electrical and geotechnical leads to develop compatible engineering solutions for projects.
* Contribute to the delivery of renewable energy project developments in accordance with the pre‑defined budgets, deadlines and quality requirements.

Minimum Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering

Preferred Qualifications
* MSc in related field
* Professional recognition qualification such as Chartered Engineer / working towards chartership.
* Industry recognised organisation registration.
* Full UK Driving License
* UK specific project experience (including greenfield, construction and commissioning visits), preferably in both design and construction settings
* Experience of outline design, feasibility, FEED, detailed design, procurement and installation project stages associated with, but not limited to, the following:
* Substation spatial layout and associated civil infrastructure works.
* External works design including road design, section agreements and earthworks.
* Utility and drainage design/coordination.
* Knowledge of construction feasibility of civil infrastructure projects.
* Proven history of establishing and maintaining key client relationships.
* Familiar with proposal / tender preparation and review.
