Job Summary

The post holder will work within North Mid in the Community as part of the Podiatry Team and Diabetes Service. They will work effectively in a multidisciplinary (MDT) approach for the benefit of the patient.

MDT clinics will run providing holistic assessment and treatment to patients and there is a significant health education aspect to the role.

The post holder will also work within the podiatry department as a B7 diabetic specialist podiatrist.


Main Duties

To work effectively in a multidisciplinary approach with other health care professionals for the benefit of the patient. This will involve working with other professionals (e.g., Diabetes Specialist Nurse) or in a closely coordinated manner implementing care plans.

To ensure good communications (regarding professional and medical issues) are always maintained to achieve the desired outcome.

To be involved in the production of diabetic information/education for patients, carers, and health care professionals.

To work effectively as a member of the podiatry and multi professional teams.


About Us

North Mid in the Community is part of the Royal Free Hospital Trusts, it covers the Borough of Enfield. It has very close working relationships with both the Royal Free Barnet and Pond Street acute diabetic podiatry services and the North Middlesex University Trust acute diabetic service.

The podiatry department has a modern outlook and offers a wide range of advanced therapeutic treatments to its service users, and we are seeking a podiatrist with excellent diabetic skills to join our small but committed and supportive team.

Clinical Responsibilities

1. To be responsible for the podiatric assessment, diagnosis, delivery, and evaluation of care plans using a variety of appropriate treatment regimens for high risk and at‑risk patient categories. Working either uni‑professionally or within a multidisciplinary team.

2. To hold responsibility for own caseload working as an autonomous clinical expert within diabetes/high risk foot pathologies.

3. Triage referrals as required monitoring waiting lists, prioritising and redirecting patients according to medical and podiatric need.

4. To ensure effective communication of complex and highly sensitive and emotional information to patients, this requires excellent interpersonal and counselling skills.

5. To be responsible for the clinical provision of diabetic/high risk care.

6. To undertake tailored care packages dependent on patients complex needs. To use advanced clinical reasoning skills and appropriate assessment techniques to provide an accurate clinical diagnosis of their condition.

7. Formulate and deliver individual treatment plans based on a sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and utilise extended skills such as offloading and performing ABPIs.

8. To evaluate and review agreed patient treatment outcomes to facilitate patients engagement/self‑care/onward referral.

9. To work in close collaboration with the community diabetic team including the Diabetic Specialist Nurse and Tissue Viability Specialist to ensure a holistic approach to the management of the at‑risk and high‑risk patient is met.

10. To take a proactive role in the planning and delivery of Health Promotion and Health Education to users and health care professionals (HCP). Including promoting the department’s services to other HCP to ensure appropriate patients are referred to Podiatry. And to develop and deliver a training programme for HCP for screening the at‑risk diabetic foot in Community/Primary Care. To deliver diabetic education to users in conjunction with the diabetes service.

11. To understand offloading for the high‑risk foot and prescribe, modify, and fit off‑the‑shelf orthoses/insoles as required. To liaise with extended care network including orthopaedics, and surgical appliances to ensure that the patients rehabilitation needs are met.

12. Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.

13. To work within Trust clinical guidelines, national and professional body guidelines and standards, thus, to have a good working knowledge of national and local standards and monitor own and others quality of practice as appropriate.

14. To be responsible for maintaining accurate comprehensive patient treatment records in line with recognised professional standards of practice (i.e. Royal College of Podiatrists) and BEH policies. To record patient appointment outcomes on Rio within 24 hours.

15. To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in your care.

16. Where appropriate, to supervise and provide mentoring to other podiatrists and care assistants.

17. To be responsible for the maintenance and security of stock in own work area, with the added responsibility of some clinical online ordering.

18. To refer patients on as necessary to other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate care is provided and to follow Trust referral timeline.

19. To deliver diabetic health education to service users.


Person Specification – Essential

* Degree in Podiatry with LA certificate
* Broad based postgraduate NHS experience with significant component in diabetic outpatients
* Experience in advanced neurovascular and gait assessment
* Ability to use advanced Podiatric diagnostic tools and to develop further skills
* Experience of providing foot health education


Person Specification – Desirable

* Completion of diabetic postgraduate programmes
* Teaching, mentoring or supervision training
* Independent prescribing
