Consultant Clinical Oncologist with an Interest in Upper GI

The current opportunity is for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist with an Interest in Upper Gastrointestinal Cancers. You will provide care to patients served by the directorate, which may include services at NCCC‑Carlisle.

Candidates must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.

Job responsibilities
* Provide oncology advice to the relevant MDT and to patients with upper gastrointestinal cancers.
* Prescribe and supervise chemotherapy.
* Provide on‑call cover for general oncological emergencies and offer advice in and out of hours to non‑specialist teams.
* Manage out‑patient clinics, day unit and ward.
* Participate in the directorate clinical governance processes, including reporting into the Trust mortality database.
* Engage with all administrative electronic systems required to deliver patient care.
* Contribute to the active research programme within the directorate, with links to the Sir Bobby Robson Unit at Freeman Hospital, the late‑phase research team within the R&D directorate and Newcastle University.
* Develop and deliver teaching skills, including bedside and clinical teaching of undergraduate students.
* Supervise clinical training of Trust junior doctors, Deanery trainees and AHCPs.
* Possibly work a flexible pattern, including evenings and weekends, in line with the Trust’s core values.
Person Specification
Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills
* Primary medical qualification.
* Full GMC registration.
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register within six months from the date of the AAC.
* Higher degree.
* Special skills training in the specialty.
Clinical Experience
* Evidence of experience in the specialty.
* Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty.
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion within the specialty.
* Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre.
Management and Administration Experience
* Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty.
* Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines.
* Understanding of clinical governance.
* Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals.
* Evidence of leadership or project management.
* Evidence of having implemented change.
* Experience in developing and implementing new technologies.
Teaching
* Experience supervising junior medical staff.
* Experience participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
* Ability to teach clinical, technical, practical skills.
* Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills.
* Postgraduate qualification in medical education.
Research
* Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings.
* Research/critical review of literature.
* Publications in the last five years.
Audit
* Evidence of participation in audit.
* Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit.
* Evidence of having revisited the audit to assess improvement.
Personal Attributes
* Alignment with the Trust’s values.
* Flexible approach to service delivery and a commitment to development.
