Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated dietitian to join our expanded gastroenterology and colorectal service based at Charing Cross. This post is dedicated to managing an in-patient lower gastro-intestinal caseload of predominately medically managed but will support the surgical cases. It will require a thorough understanding of complex nutrition support requirements including parenteral nutrition and complex enteral tube feeding.

This post offers the opportunity to work autonomously to develop this specialist role.

There is an option to increase the contracted hours from 0.5WTE to 0.7WTE as part of a flexible working request.

Main duties of the job

1. To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including management of patients in your care and undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.
2. To provide comprehensive and specialist therapy assessment and diagnosis for patients with a range of highly complex presentations, by utilising advanced clinical reasoning, evidence-based knowledge, investigative and analytical skills and specialist assessment techniques.
3. To plan and organise time efficiently and effectively with regard to patient management and use of time. To be accountable for the designated area of work.
4. To manage changes in service and staffing, both planned and unpredictable, and support and facilitate staff with caseload management.
5. To employ excellent presentation skills to promote multidisciplinary and interagency liaison and collaborative practice to a broad range of audiences, including other professionals and users.
6. Promote a culture of research awareness, research preparedness and activity in the team.

Person specification

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria

7. Degree (or equivalent) in Dietetics
8. State registration with the Health and Care Professions Council
9. Evidence of CPD through maintenance of a portfolio, especially in the relevant clinical area
10. Clinical Educators course or equivalent

Desirable criteria

11. Membership of the Professional Organisation
12. Membership of Professional special interest groups relevant to speciality
13. Relevant Postgraduate clinical qualification e.g. PENG clinical update, St Mark’s intestinal failure courses
14. Management skills or leadership training

Experience

Essential criteria

15. Significant recent clinical experience in relevant clinical area both inpatient and outpatient setting
16. Evidence of a broad base of clinical experience at Band 6 level or equivalent
17. Significant experience of working as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team and inter agency working
18. Experience of multidisciplinary goal planning, development of care pathways and using outcome measures
19. Experience of organising and implementing training programmes for therapists, MDT members, support workers, students and apprentices.
20. Experience of service development/change management
21. Experience in implementing evidence based practice in speciality
22. Experience of on-call and weekend working in an acute hospital (if required for job role)

Desirable criteria

23. Previous Band 7 or equivalent experience in relevant post – inpatient and outpatient setting.
24. Leadership of a therapy team
25. Recent, relevant work in an NHS environment
26. Experience of using clinical governance framework to monitor and improve quality of patient care
27. Clinical research experience

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

Essential criteria

28. Advanced knowledge of assessment and treatment approaches for the effective management of relevant conditions including parenteral nutrition
29. Advanced skills in the appropriate application of a range of techniques and approaches to the management of relevant conditions
30. Advanced clinical reasoning and problem solving skills
31. Advanced knowledge of relevant conditions
32. Advanced knowledge of the evidence base of the relevant therapy area
33. Knowledge of the influence of psychosocial and cultural factors health/illness behaviours
34. Ability to remain updated with professional practice and research and integrate this into daily patient management
35. Ability to organise, prioritise and delegate as appropriate and manage time effectively
36. Able to make sound judgments and reliable decisions in a variety of demanding situations
37. Ability to keep accurate and legible patient notes
38. Understanding of clinical governance and the implications for therapy services including experience of quality issues and audit
39. Ability to comprehend and work within the Trust’s policies of data protection, equal opportunities and health and safety and meet differing patient needs

Desirable criteria

40. Knowledge of recent NHS developments and their impact on service provision
41. Advanced computer skills for presentation and data analysis
42. Negotiation and conflict resolution skills
