Job Opportunity: Benefits Assessment Officer Location: Remote or Office-Based (depending on preference)
Contract: 3 to 6-Month Ongoing Contract
Rate: £25.00 per hour (Umbrella)
Hours: Full-Time, Monday to Friday
Are you an experienced Benefits Assessment Officer with a strong working knowledge of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support legislation? We’re looking for a detail-oriented and proactive professional to join our Revenues & Benefits team on a flexible, hybrid contract.
Purpose of the Role: To assess, administer, and determine eligibility for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support in line with current legislation and Council policy. The role involves verifying customer information, managing changes in circumstances, and ensuring correct benefit subsidy and entitlement are applied efficiently and accurately.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assess applications for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support received by post, online, email, and in person.
2. Verify eligibility based on claimant circumstances, proactively contacting customers and third parties (e.g. landlords, DWP, HMRC) for necessary documentation.
3. Process changes in circumstances using data from ATLAS, VEP, UCDS, and other sources, ensuring updates are actioned within defined timescales.
4. Make accurate benefit decisions and communicate outcomes to claimants and landlords.
5. Maintain clear, up-to-date digital records and annotations on all claims and actions.
6. Identify and report fraudulent or incorrect claims to the DWP’s Fraud and Error Service.
7. Issue and manage Housing Benefit Overpayment invoices, including recovery from ongoing entitlements or alternative methods.
8. Respond to claimant and landlord enquiries via phone, email, letter, or face-to-face when required.
9. Offer benefit-related advice, including guidance on Universal Credit and Pension Credit, as well as liaising with internal departments and external stakeholders.
Ideal Candidate Will Have:
10. Proven experience in Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support assessment
11. Strong understanding of current benefits legislation, including eligibility rules and entitlement calculation
12. Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal
