The Audit and Investigation service provides independent assurance, advice, and investigative support across the Council. Our work helps protect public funds, strengthen governance, and ensure that services operate with integrity and transparency. The team delivers fraud prevention, detection, and investigation activity in line with the Council’s policies and statutory responsibilities.
About the job
This role is a core part of the Council’s counter fraud function. The postholder is responsible for receiving and risk assessing fraud referrals, carrying out initial checks and allocating appropriate cases for criminal investigation.
Additionally the postholder will be responsible for overseeing and progressing the annual National Fraud Initiative exercise. This will include liaising with colleagues and external bodies, including Audit Wales, conducting investigations, gathering evidence, contacting witnesses and respondents, preparing reports and case documentation.
All work must be carried out lawfully and in accordance with legislation, Council policies and professional standards.
What We Are Looking For From You
You will be able to demonstrate experience of conducting interviews and producing clear, accurate written reports.
You should be capable of managing and de‑escalating difficult or confrontational situations, negotiating and influencing appropriately and working in compliance with Acts of Parliament and established procedures.
You will need strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage priorities and workloads effectively, and communicate clearly and professionally both orally and in writing.
You must be competent in the use of modern technology to support investigative work and be able to apply innovative and creative thinking when addressing problems or enquiries.
Experience of working within local government or the wider public sector is desirable. A basic DBS check is required.
