Job Title Band 7 Sonographer Department Ultrasound / Radiology Department Reports To Lead Sonographer / Superintendent Sonographer Radiology Manager / Imaging Services Manager Location & Hours Hospital / community diagnostic centre (cross-site cover may be required) Full-time (37.5 hours/week) or part-time May include weekend rota, extended day, or on-call commitment depending on service needs Clinical Duties Independently perform a wide range of diagnostic ultrasound scans (obstetric, gynaecological, abdominal, small parts, MSK, vascular or other as required by the service). Assess referrals for clinical justification, triage patients appropriately. Interpret and report ultrasound findings independently in line with departmental protocols. Recognise urgent or unexpected findings and escalate appropriately. Patient Care Ensure a high standard of patient care: explaining procedures, gaining informed consent, maintaining dignity and comfort. Communicate results sensitively, including where findings may be distressing. Adapt techniques to suit patient needs, including complex or challenging cases. Quality & Safety Adhere to departmental protocols and national guidelines, maintaining consistently high image quality. Ensure safe use of equipment, applying ALARA principles to minimise patient exposure. Participate in departmental audits, quality assurance, and UKAS / governance requirements. Identify, troubleshoot, and report equipment issues promptly. Education, Training & Supervision Supervise and support junior sonographers, trainees, radiographers, and student placements. Provide mentorship and competency assessments as required. Deliver training sessions, induction and continuous development opportunities. Engage in personal CPD and maintain up-to-date knowledge of advances in ultrasound practice. Leadership & Service Development Contribute to the development and review of departmental scanning protocols and guidelines. Participate in service improvement projects and audits. Assist the Lead Sonographer in workload planning and rota management. Take responsibility for specific service areas or projects as delegated. Essential Qualifications & Experience Postgraduate qualification in Medical Ultrasound (e.g. PgC/PgD/DMU or equivalent). HCPC, NMC or other relevant professional registration. Substantial post-qualification experience in a clinical ultrasound setting. Proven competence across a range of ultrasound examinations relevant to the post. Evidence of ongoing CPD and professional development.
