Overview

The successful candidate will provide anaesthesia for a broad range of surgical specialties on site, including colorectal, hepato‑biliary, vascular, major head & neck, orthopaedics and trauma. Children over 6 months old will also receive anaesthesia. The role includes a job plan of 10.2 PA per week, with 1.5 PA for SPA, 1.2 PA for DCC attributable to on‑call and six sessions for anaesthetic services (1.25 PA per list). On‑call duties are a 1:11 basis (1.2 PA per week) alternated between the Blackburn and Burnley sites – Blackburn is the acute site with ED and all general emergencies; Burnley is for obstetrics and gynaecology emergencies. Teaching and training are high priorities; the department takes trainees from the North West School of Anaesthesia and all Consultants are expected to contribute to teaching.


Job Responsibilities

The role covers anaesthesia across the listed specialties, with responsibilities that include:

* Delivering anaesthetic care to colorectal, hepato‑biliary, vascular, major head & neck, orthopaedic and trauma patients
* Providing anaesthesia for paediatric patients over 6 months old
* Managing on‑call duties on a 1:11 rota across Blackburn and Burnley sites
* Participating in teaching and training of trainees, junior staff supervision, and service development


Essential Criteria

* Full registration with the General Medical Council
* Inclusion on the Specialist Register or admission to register within six months
* Previous NHS experience
* Ability to communicate with patients, relatives, colleagues and staff effectively, respectfully and with empathy
* Experience of supervising junior staff
* Ability to lead the development of services and promote best practice amongst colleagues
* Ability to work in a team with evidence of such
* Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification


Desirable Criteria

* A higher qualification such as M.D. or MSc
* APLS/ATLS certification
* Experience in hepato‑biliary anaesthesia
* Higher level training in paediatric anaesthesia
* Experience in vascular anaesthesia
* Experience and interest in peri‑operative anaesthesia, advanced airway management and goal‑directed fluid therapy
* Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and commitment to teaching within the Trust
* Clinical supervisor status
* Understanding of the need for quality in health care
* Awareness of basic research methods
* Familiarity with evidence‑based practice
* Experience in audit during general professional and higher specialist training
* Attendance at courses in teaching, appraisal and mentorship, and organization of educational meetings
* Educational supervisor status
* Evidence of involvement in quality improvement projects
* Previous research projects or publications in peer‑reviewed journals
* Good Clinical Practice training
* Commitment to lifelong learning
* Membership of appropriate postgraduate societies
* IT skills and understanding of current NHS management systems, clinical governance and risk management
* Attendance at management meetings and appropriate management courses
* Previous participation in a management role
* Experience in appraisal and mentoring
* Attendance at workshops such as Death/Bereavement or Breaking News and counselling courses

Salary and Working Hours

* The advertised salary is for full time hours. If the post is less than 37.5 hours per week, the salary will be pro‑rated.
* For posts on Agenda for Change pay‑scales, new entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the first pay point of the relevant band.
