We have a rare opportunity within our team to join as a Coroners Officer.

Our team consists of 7 Coroners Officers and 1 Senior Coroners Officer. The Avon Coroner's Office covers North Somerset, Bath, Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

You will be investigating and administering deaths promptly and exhaustively, working in conjunction with and on behalf of the Coroner and the Police.

You will gather evidence for any unnatural, unexplained or unexpected deaths to assist the Coroner in decision‑making.

This full‑time post is available for 37 hours per week. On‑call duties are available as an option.

When you are not working from home, a designated office space can be provided at our main office at the Coroner’s Court located at Flax Bourton.

Main Responsibilities

* Receive reports of sudden or un‑natural deaths, especially those that may have occurred in suspicious circumstances.
* Notify the Coroner of all cases, ensuring all relevant details are provided; liaise with Detectives if there is any possibility of a criminal investigation.
* Establish the deceased’s medical history, obtain witness statements, and discuss the case with the family doctor to determine whether a certificate of cause of death can be issued.
* Arrange for the body to be transferred to the mortuary, take possession of the deceased’s property, catalogue details, organise a post‑mortem, identify the body to the Pathologist, ensure the Pathologist is informed of the circumstances, and take possession of any organ or sample taken for analysis.
* Assist with urgent enquiries from medical organisations to obtain consent for organ transplant by authorising HM Coroner.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications Required

* Experience dealing with deaths, inquests and attending post‑mortems.
* Experience working within an investigative environment.
* Ability to be patient and sensitive.
* Knowledge of medical and pathological terms and findings.
* Knowledge of legal matters relating to deaths such as registration of deaths.
* Three‑year checkable history in the UK (i.e., residence in the UK for the last three years).

Work Arrangement and Eligibility

* This is a hybrid role, combining home and office work. The successful candidate will, however, work solely from the office during the first six months for induction and training.
* The role is based on the first floor of a building without lift access.
* We welcome applications from disabled candidates and will work with applicants to explore reasonable adjustments, including alternative working arrangements or locations.
