Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse to support the Ward Managers and team of nursing staff within the Department of Acute Medicine at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. This comprises an Acute Medical Assessment (AMA)/Enhanced Care/Acute Medical Unit (AMU). There are permanent posts and secondments available. The candidate will require extensive post registration experience. You will be an experienced RGN and be able to lead and supervise the work of the nursing team, building upon your own clinical and managerial experience.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be instrumental in supporting the Ward Managers with the continuous improvement of the department, effectively monitoring and maintaining excellent standards of care that are reflected by patient experience. Sound clinical knowledge and experience in an acute setting is essential.

The successful candidate must have a proven ability in supervising, managing and controlling the activities of a department in an efficient and effective manner. This will involve the assessment and implementation of appropriate care for new and current patients whilst ensuring adequate staffing levels are maintained and resources used appropriately.

Showing commitment and direction to the team as a whole you will actively participate in the teaching, training and supervision of all grades of staff. You will be required to be receptive to change, be dynamic and demonstrate active assistance and support to your more senior colleagues in the ongoing development of the department.

You must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you will have a proactive management style, anticipating and dealing with issues constructively within the multidisciplinary team setting. You must be flexible in your approach to the role and respond appropriately to the demands of an ever-changing workload.

Professional /Technical Qualif

* RGN
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development / Qualification relevant to Area of Speciality
* Experience in an acute hospital setting


Experience and Knowledge

* Extensive post registration experience in the relevant speciality or equivalent
* High level clinical skills and knowledge
* Evidence of successfully co-ordinating, managing and leading the team on a day to day basis.
* Evidence of teaching qualification
* Evidence in undertaking preceptor /assessor & supervisor role role.
* Involvement in Nursing audit and Research.
* An awareness and understanding of policy and practice relevant to speciality.
