JOB TITLE: Teacher – Post‑Primary
REPORTS TO: Principal
PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER
Regulation 5 – Exercise of general professional duties.
* Carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:
o If employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal of that school.
o If employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which he/she may for the time being be required to work as a teacher.
* Exercise of particular duties: a teacher (other than a principal) shall perform, in accordance with any directions which may be reasonably given by the principal from time to time, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned to him/her.
* For a teacher referred to in paragraph 1(b), perform, in accordance with any direction which may reasonably be given by the board or by the principal of any school in which he/she may for the time being be required to work as a teacher, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1.1 Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
1.2 Teaching, according to pupils’ educational needs, including setting and marking work to be carried out by pupils in school and elsewhere;
1.3 Assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
2.1 Promoting the general progress and well‑being of pupils and any class or group;
2.2 Providing advice and guidance on educational, social matters and future careers, including information on further education and sources of expert advice;
2.3 Making records of and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs, except where it might compromise the teacher’s own position;
2.4 Communicating and consulting with parents;
2.5 Communicating and cooperating with approved external persons or bodies;
2.6 Participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above.
3.1 Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils and groups, except where it might compromise the teacher’s own position.
4.1 Participating, if required, in any staff development and performance review scheme;
4.2 Reviewing teaching methods and programmes; participating in arrangements for further training and professional development;
4.3 Advising and cooperating with the principal and other teachers on curriculum, teaching materials, programmes, methods and pastoral arrangements.
5.1 Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding pupils’ health and safety, both on school premises and during authorised activities elsewhere;
5.2 Participating in school meetings relating to curriculum, administration, organisation and pastoral arrangements.
6.1 Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing pupils for such examinations; recording and reporting assessments; supervising pupils during examinations.
7.1 Contributing to the selection, appointment and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers; coordinating or managing the work of other teachers; participating in the review, development and management of curriculum and pastoral functions;
7.2 Participating in administrative and organisational tasks, including supervision of support staff, ordering and allocation of equipment and materials; attending assemblies; registering attendance and supervising pupils before, during or after school sessions.
8.1 Full‑time teacher availability: 195 days per year (no more than 190 days teaching children in a classroom situation); 1,265 hours per year exclusive of off‑premises preparation, marking and travel; maximum teaching hours per week: 25 for primary or special schools, 23.5 for secondary schools; mandatory 30‑minute break between 12:00 and 14:00 (or 14:30 for nursery schools); mid‑day supervision not required unless separately contracted.
9.1 Supervising and teaching pupils whose teacher is unavailable, subject to enrolment limits and absence duration as outlined in the regulation.
Other duties of a similar nature and appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time. The post‑holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity and pay due regard for equality legislation at all times.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
NOTES TO JOB APPLICANTS

SECTION 1 – ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
* Qualifications/Professional Membership:
Hold a teaching qualification recognised for teaching Art in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland; hold a Level 6 qualification that prepares the applicant to teach Art as the main subject.
* Experience:
Minimum 5 years of demonstrable teaching experience of Art at Key Stage 4; minimum 3 years at Key Stage 5; demonstrable experience using diverse teaching strategies and digital media/technology to enhance learning; willingness to teach Moving Images Arts.
* Other:
Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up the post.
SECTION 2 – ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL CRITERIA (INTERVIEW/STAGE 2)
* Knowledge: Northern Ireland Curriculum; safeguarding and child protection policy; SEND Code of Practice; teaching strategies for diverse learners; IT systems and digital classroom tools; current assessment methods.
* Skills / Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management; supportive inclusive learning environment; collaboration with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community; team member and motivator.
* Values Orientation / Identification with School Ethos: Evidence of how experience and approach reflect the school’s values/ethos.
SECTION 3 – DESIRABLE CRITERIA
* Demonstrable experience leading a team within a school setting; providing support and challenge to all abilities, including SED students.
* Monitoring pupil progress, performance, target setting and intervention.
* Co‑ordinating an art club or cross‑curricular activity.
DISCLOSURE OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND
In the event of a recommended appointment involving ‘regulated activity’, an Enhanced Disclosure Certificate will be required. The applicant will be expected to cover the cost.
