Overview
We are seeking to recruit a motivated physicist to specialise in Radiation Protection and Imaging Physics with a focus on Laser Safety. This is a 2-year fixed-term role providing cover during a career break. The position delivers expert advice to users of ionising radiation within NHS Lothian and performs the Laser Protection Adviser function. The role also supports certified Radiation Protection Advisers, Radioactive Waste Advisers, and Medical Physics Experts while the holder works towards their own certification.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide support to existing physicists certified as Radiation Protection Advisers, Radioactive Waste Advisers, and Medical Physics Experts.
* Deliver expert advice to users of ionising radiation within NHS Lothian.
* Act as the Laser Protection Adviser, providing guidance on laser safety.
* Collaborate closely with Expert Advisers (RPA, MPE, RWA, LPA) to deliver a high-quality radiation protection service.
* Cover during a career break, maintaining continuity of service.
Qualifications & Experience
* Honours degree or equivalent qualification in a physical science or an appropriate engineering discipline (e.g., electrical or electronic engineering).
* Full membership of IPEM and registration as a Clinical Scientist (Medical Physics) with the Health and Care Professions Council.
* Certification as an MPE, RPA, RWA and/or LPA, or experience to achieve certification within the next 12 months (advantageous).
* Demonstrated initiative, written and verbal communication skills, tact, diplomacy, leadership, organisational and scientific abilities.
* Effective teamwork skills and willingness to work across Lothian and Fife.
Additional Requirements
* Post holder must have a PVG Scheme membership/record; if not a current PVG member, an application will need to be made to Disclosure Scotland and deemed satisfactory before commencing.
* Applicants must possess the required right to work in the United Kingdom. UK work permits, EU settled, or pre‑settled status must be evidence. If the right to work is not available, sponsorship via a UK Skilled Worker/Health & Care Worker Visa may be possible, subject to sponsorship eligibility.
Contract & Working Hours
0.6 WTE (22.2 hours per week) part‑term role for a 2‑year fixed‑term contract.
