At the heart of our Traffic Engineering service is a clear mission: to design and deliver local safety schemes that reduce both the number and severity of road‑traffic casualties across North Yorkshire.
Our work spans a wide range of responsibilities, including:
* Developing and maintaining robust traffic management and road‑safety engineering policies
* Tackling congestion and improving safety by optimising traffic signal performance at key locations
* Maintaining and enhancing the condition of existing traffic‑signal infrastructure
* Monitoring and managing the performance of our traffic‑signal maintenance contractor
* Providing specialist parking expertise and leading high‑profile parking initiatives
Together, we play a vital role in shaping a safer, more efficient transport network for all road users.
The Role
As our Traffic Management & Road Safety Engineer you will:
* Conduct countywide reviews of speed limits to ensure they remain appropriate, safe, and effective
* Identify and develop Local Safety and Collision Prevention Schemes, undertake Road Safety Audits and Fatal Collision Inspections.
* Prepare and consult on the design of schemes within the Integrated Transport Capital Programme and be responsible as necessary for the design of traffic engineering measures, including traffic signals, traffic management and parking studies.
* Be responsible for the preparation of traffic sign design and schedules and assist in ensuring schemes comply with the Local Transport Plan.
The post holder will produce and update traffic management and road safety engineering policy.
What you will bring
* An HND/C in Civil Engineering or equivalent
* Working knowledge of legislation relating to traffic signs and traffic calming
* Experience in Collision investigation studies and safety schemes including traffic calming
* Experience in the preparation or participation of Road Safety AuditsExperience within a highways related role
* Experience in the use of ACAD and other ICT skills
* Experience of Traffic Regulation Procedures
If you have an understanding of local government administrative and financial procedures that would be a bonus.
Due to the nature of this role, there will be some travel required – for this you must hold a full driving licence.
