Overview
We are looking to recruit a motivated and reliable Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) Band 3, with good communication skills, to work as part of our integrated Clinical Chemistry and Immunology Team. The main duties will include the pre- and post-analytical processing of patient specimens for Immunology and Biochemistry, and various laboratory duties supporting the biomedical scientists.
We provide a full 24/7 service supported by a shift system (Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions apply) including weekends and Bank Holidays. Previous laboratory and/or Specimen Reception experience would be an advantage. We are passionate about what we do and will look for you to match our values.
Responsibilities
* Handle and process a range of human biological samples to prepare for appropriate sample analysis and support the BMS team with a range of technical duties to provide a comprehensive range of analyses/investigations in the provision of the Clinical Chemistry and Immunology service.
* Receive and collate patients' samples when they arrive in the laboratory and perform preliminary processing of specimens prior to analysis.
* Store and maintain a detailed archive of samples and perform clerical duties as required.
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of new developments in the laboratory.
* Bring to the attention of BMS staff any problem specimens, urgent requests, leaking samples or any specimens that do not align with the request form.
* Notify senior BMS staff of stock usage and what needs to be ordered.
* Report adverse incidents, non-conformities or health and safety breaches to a BMS or senior BMS.
* Temperature monitoring of fridge, freezers, incubators and the environment.
* General housekeeping including removal of waste, cleaning of safety cabinets, centrifuges and work surfaces; prepare disinfectants for use; regularly defrost fridges and freezers.
* Provide wards and clinics with Cryoglobulin sample pickup and transport.
* Assist BMS staff with the retrieval of samples for processing and sending samples to reference laboratories.
* Attend laboratory meetings and participate in CPD.
* Participate in Quality activities, such as audits and investigations of non-conformities.
* Participate in H&S activities, such as risk and COSHH assessment.
Qualifications / Requirements
* Previous laboratory and/or Specimen Reception experience would be an advantage.
* Willingness to work 7 days including Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays; ability to work within a 24/7 service.
* Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
* Commitment to confidentiality of patient records and data according to Data Protection Act 1998, GDPR and Caldicott Guidelines.
* Ability to perform laboratory duties diligently with due care for health, safety and welfare.
* Willingness to undergo on-the-job training to develop competence and independence.
* Organisational skills to manage own work and ensure results are validated and quality controlled.
