Consultant Anaesthetists support the department of Anaesthesia. The post comprises 10 PA's, with direct clinical care of 8.5 PA and supporting professional activity of 1.5 PA. Additional SPA activity may be approved.
The successful candidate will be contracted to Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and will be based at King's Mill Hospital. They will also work at Newark hospital as needed for elective theatre sessions. Full‑time, with part‑time or job‑share options available.
Working relationships: Consultants in Anaesthesia, Critical Care, Theatre Staff, Divisional Managers, other department members, senior nursing staff and hospital management.
Main duties of the job Clinical duties
Assist in the provision and development of a safe, effective, and efficient anaesthetic service and support the Trust's aim to provide the best possible care to patients.
Out‑of‑hours responsibilities, including participation in the consultant on‑call rota.
Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
Assist in professional supervision and management of junior medical staff, observing local employment and human resource policies and procedures.
Organise and participate in teaching, examination and accreditation duties for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally.
Research & Audit
Actively participate in medical audit, the Trust's Clinical Governance processes and in continuing professional development.
Implement audit and research findings as appropriate.
Policy & Planning
Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols.
Review and develop policies for clinical practice and effectiveness.
Participate in strategic planning for the service.
About us The department has a current substantive consultant establishment of twenty‑five, with up to 20 Specialist/SAS/Clinical Fellow grade Anaesthetists. The trainee establishment includes 9 CTs and 7 ST3+ rotating from the East Midlands School of Anaesthesia. Two Foundation Year 1 doctors and one Foundation Year 2 doctor are on four‑month rotations.
We manage our service with open discussion, listening to and respecting everyone's views. Clinical specialty leads facilitate change and improvements supported by the leadership team. Active participation in service development, departmental management, clinical governance and education is required.
The Anaesthetic Department is actively working towards National Accreditation with the Royal College of Anaesthetists; completion is expected within the next two years.
Qualifications
Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or eligibility for specialist registration within six months of interview.
FRCA or equivalent.
Clinical Experience
Experience requisite to meet all aspects of the job plan.
Ability to maintain clinical credibility and authority with a multi‑professional team including senior trainees.
Up‑to‑date Advanced Life Support and EPLS or equivalent.
Completed specialist training or CESR in the UK.
Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR‑equivalent training programme.
Advanced training / subspeciality interest.
Interest in anaesthesia for high BMI patients.
Management & Administrative Experience
Ability to organise and manage clinical workload effectively.
Understanding of the current structure of the National Health Service.
Involvement in Quality Improvement projects and development of guidelines.
Potential to develop management and leadership skills.
Completed a Management Course.
Knowledge and interest in clinical governance.
Teaching
Evidence of organising and delivering teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Diploma in Medical Education.
Demonstrable teaching ability with evidence of training for the role.
Research & Audit
Ability to convert research evidence into clinical practice.
Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
Participation in research relating to Anaesthesia.
Other Attributes
Ability to communicate effectively with team members, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.
Commitment to Continuing Medical Education and the requirements of Clinical Governance and Audit.
Flexibility to change with the needs of the service.
Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
