An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified Biomedical Scientist with HCPC registration to work within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratories at York Hospital.
This is a full‑time vacancy of 37.5 hours per week. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the 24/7 shift rota once suitably trained and competency achieved. Applications are considered from those working towards completion of the IBMS specialist portfolio in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. The Trust supports automatic progression from Band 5 to Band 6 upon successful completion of the IBMS specialist portfolio.
The department is fully equipped with the Sysmex XN series for Haematology, Sysmex CN for Coagulation, Grifols technology and Haemonetics Blood Tracking in Blood Transfusion. It is UKAS accredited and has recently gone live with Winpath Enterprise LIMS.
It will be a contractual requirement for the successful candidate to participate in the 24/7 shift system.
Responsibilities
* Carry out the analysis of patient samples, quality controls (QC) and external quality assessment samples (EQA) according to departmental SOPs and departmental Quality Assurance Policy.
* Ensure that specialist equipment within the area of work is functioning efficiently through good housekeeping, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.
* Perform technical validation of patient results.
* Communicate effectively with clinicians, nurses and other service users on information of a technical nature.
* Undertake shift work including evening, weekend and night work. This will involve working mostly alone and includes the provisional authorisation of results used for immediate patient management, carrying potentially serious consequences if any errors occur.
