About the role The Senior Technical Writer manages the documentation required to support a defined product area within our platform. They'll be a subject matter expert for the area, and will ensure all documentation is delivered on time to meet the commitments of the business stream as part of the development cycles. They're responsible for ensuring content meets the agreed standards, peer reviews, taking wider editorial responsibility for the content delivered within the product area, and understanding the information needs of both our audiences and our own business. What you will do We're looking to hire a Senior Technical Writer to work as part of a growing technical communications function within our Fulfilment business stream, which develops the software and systems that run our in-store fulfilment and warehouse solutions used by businesses across the globe. The Senior Technical Writer will work alongside other technical writers within the stream and be responsible for providing high-quality documentation to support a number of engineering teams in a defined product area. That documentation includes software user guides, feature guides, setup and configuration guides, operating guides, and release notes, as well as developer documentation, such as API or data feed references, when required. As Senior Technical Writer you'll become a subject matter expert for your product area. You'll identify the narrative that accompanies the product area and that helps different audiences understand what it does and how it works. Following the agreed content strategy, standards and style guidelines, you'll identify and create all the content that's required to support the solution, and any new features as they're developed. A key aspect of the role is to plan and coordinate the work needed for the product area, recording tasks in Jira, and working with other stakeholders to ensure content needs are captured, and the results are delivered on time. In addition to content responsibilities, you'll also record the terminology for the product area, and contribute to UI text within any user interfaces developed - ensuring it is clear, consistent and appropriate for its audience - in line with agreed standards. This is an exciting role that requires someone who has a high level of relevant experience, and who has a demonstrable understanding of modern approaches to documentation. Detailed responsibilities are outlined below. Content management Ensure all content meets agreed standards for style, tone and information architecture, and meets the needs of its audiences. Identify narratives for each product area and use those to explain how it works. Monitor the effectiveness of the content, identify gaps, and seek improvements where necessary. Work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure relevant work is delivered according to development cycles. Make recommendations to improve the overall content strategy for technical communications supporting our platform development. Product alignment and contribution Work closely with Product, UX and Engineering teams to ensure deliverables meet the objectives set by the business stream and the wider technical communications strategy. Develop an in-depth view of the products built by the business stream, and how they relate to other platform solutions. Play a key role in developing a platform language for our solution, so that features are named in accordance with the product and communications strategy, and that UI copy is suitable. Task management Work with stakeholders to ensure all required work for product updates is identified and tracked in JIRA. Attend business stream planning meetings to represent technical communications for the product area. Ensure work is delivery-focused and effort is balanced against product deadlines. You may be asked to perform tasks as required by management deemed as a reasonable request. Experience in defining or contributing to technical writing processes and style guides. Experience in content structure and strategy. Experience in SME and stakeholder management. Experience in managing tasks in JIRA. Excellent communication skills, to people of all levels. Good organisation and prioritisation skills. Bonus points if you also have Experience of creating content following a 'docs as code' approach. Experience of DITA. Experience in writing API documentation and references. Using static site generators such as Jekyll, and writing in Markdown. Using Git, or other version control systems. Working with distributed teams across multiple locations.
