Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen for a paediatric nurse to work in a secondment for 12 months as a Paediatric and Neonatal Bereavement and Family Liaison Nurse Specialist. As part of the role you will support families of babies, children and young people with a life limiting illness and extend to bereavement support when a child dies.


Main duties of the job

You will work as part of a team of nurses to have oversight of paediatric and neonatal deaths within all areas of the organisation, including cross-site collaboration with the Princess Royal University Hospital in Bromley. The role requires you to support the families before, during and after the death of a child. You will act as a key worker to the family as the single point of contact for the multidisciplinary team. In line with the death review process, you will work with the designated doctor for Child death and other clinical teams to liaise with external agencies such as coroner, police, social care, hospices and charity groups.

Job Description and Responsibilities

Please refer to the attached Job Description for a full description of the role. Responsibilities include:

* Ensure high quality evidence-based care is offered to grieving families by providing practical and emotional support in collaboration with the relevant clinical area
* Act as an expert resource/advisor to families, siblings and health care professionals, liaising with internal and external agencies whilst ensuring visibility within the specialty
* Create a child- and family-friendly environment, promoting respect and dignity for children, families and colleagues, with attention to multi-cultural and multi-faith needs
* Advocate for neonate, child and carers, ensuring the provision of appropriate information and support services
* Ensure confidentiality in line with safeguarding policies
* Work with families, clinical areas and external agencies to deliver end-of-life care plans, with an identified lead clinician per caseload
* Assist with informed consent for hospital post-mortem and retention of tissue and organs in line with guidance
* Inform relatives about post-mortem reasons including coroners, medical education and research; manage return of tissue/organ guidelines
* Coordinate visiting arrangements for relatives with Bereavement Support Service, Mortuary and Chaplaincy
* Liaise with Bereavement Support Office, Coroners Office, GPs, Pathologists and Registration Officers for death certification
* Provide guidance on bereavement support and referral to external agencies where appropriate
* Facilitate counselling and support services, identifying long-term needs and referring to relevant services
* Access translation/interpretation services as needed
* Provide consultancy on Child Bereavement Care across varieties of settings
* Monitor quality of care in line with CQC requirements and Trust objectives
* Liaise with PALS to address family concerns promptly


Person Specification

Essential

* Registered Paediatric Nurse
* Post-registration qualification relevant to the area of specialty or relevant counselling qualification
* Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

* Relevant counselling qualification
