Role Overview:
As a Senior CAD Technician, you will be responsible for producing high-quality 2D and 3D drawings and models that support feasibility design projects for highways and transport infrastructure. You'll collaborate with transport planners, engineers, and project managers to help visualise, refine, and deliver practical and buildable solutions from concept through to early design stages.
Key Responsibilities:
Produce detailed and accurate CAD drawings, plans, and layouts for feasibility highway schemes using AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D.
Interpret engineering sketches, transport assessment outputs, and design briefs to create clear and practical design solutions.
Assist in the preparation of preliminary layouts, junction improvements, access designs, and traffic calming schemes.
Work closely with transport planners, civil engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure design coherence and compliance with relevant standards (DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20, etc.).
Review and check drawing packages for accuracy and completeness.
Manage CAD standards, layer control, and file naming conventions in accordance with company protocols.
Support the development of templates and workflows to enhance drawing efficiency.
Mentor and support junior technicians and contribute to skills development across the team.
Maintain project documentation and contribute to design reports and feasibility studies.
Required Skills & Experience:
Minimum 5+ years' experience in a similar role within highways, transport, or civil infrastructure.
Proficient in AutoCAD (essential); experience with Civil 3D or MicroDrainage is a strong advantage.
Sound understanding of highway geometry, visibility splays, vehicle tracking (using AutoTrack or Swept Path), and general layout design principles.
Familiarity with design guidance including DMRB, Manual for Streets, and local authority design standards.
Ability to work independently, manage workload across multiple projects, and meet tight deadlines.
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
Desirable:
Experience working in a transport planning or consultancy environment.
Knowledge of GIS tools and traffic modelling software integration.
BIM awareness or experience using Revit or similar tools.
