Head of Design at Registers of Scotland (RoS). RoS is an award-winning public sector organisation recognised for its technology, innovation, and commitment to serving all communities across Scotland. We design, architect, and build our registration products in-house and are seeking a senior design leader to advance user-centred design across RoS. The role
RoS is looking for an exceptional Head of Design to lead and evolve our User-Centred Design (UCD) capability. You will shape how we create inclusive, accessible, and consistent services that put customers at the heart of everything we do. As a member of the leadership team, you’ll set a clear strategic vision for design at RoS, embedding the Scottish Approach to Service Design, the Digital Scotland Service Standard, and GDS principles across our channels. You’ll champion design excellence, innovation, and customer-centricity, ensuring every experience reflects our commitment to Scotland’s people, property, and economy. You’ll lead a multidisciplinary community, foster an open, collaborative culture, and strengthen our design operations to grow capability and nurture the next generation of designers.
Success in this role will look like:
* A clear, endorsed design vision and strategy guiding all change and investment
* Design represented at executive and board level, influencing strategic decisions
* Consistent visual and interaction design standards across all RoS services
* A mature DesignOps model driving efficiency and reuse of assets
* 100% WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility compliance for new services

Location, pattern and benefits
Location: Hybrid working model. Contractual base either at Meadowbank House, Edinburgh (EH8 7AU), or St Vincent Plaza, Glasgow (G2 5LD). You will be expected to attend these locations as required by the role.
Working pattern: 35 hours per week. We are a flexible employer and will consider a variety of working patterns on a case-by-case basis. Examples include compressed hours, term-time working, or part-time working.
Grade: C2
Duration: Permanent
Annual leave: 42 days annual holiday
Pension: 28.97% of base salary RoS contribution
Base pay range: See pay details in the candidate pack. Total remuneration shown reflects a 16% Digital, Data and Technology Annual Pay Supplement included in the total.
Note: The base salary for this role is £77,986-£89,139; total remuneration £90,463-£103,401.
