Responsibilities
The Laboratory Technician performs waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, Bus. & Prof. Code Section 1204, requiring skills aligned with their education, training, and experience. Responsibilities include:
1. Adhering to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
2. Following quality control policies and documenting corrective actions for test deviations.
3. Identifying and addressing problems affecting test performance, notifying supervisors or medical directors as needed.
4. Performing a variety of laboratory procedures using manual and automated methods across disciplines such as Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, and Immunology.
5. Performing and documenting maintenance on instruments and equipment.
6. Reviewing patient results for accuracy before reporting.
7. Recognizing age-specific differences in expected results from newborns to geriatrics.
8. Testing proficiency samples in the same manner as patient samples, avoiding collaboration prior to reporting results.
9. Performing venipuncture or capillary puncture as required across all age groups.
10. Assisting in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
11. Adhering to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and HR policies.
12. Possibly serving as Lead Tech in the absence of a supervisor, overseeing the section or department during their shift.
13. Managing responsibilities related to LIS and/or POCT as assigned.
14. Performing other tasks as assigned by the department manager or director.
Qualifications
Education, Experience, and Training:
* ASCP certification or equivalent required within one year of employment; preferred.
* One year of hospital laboratory experience preferred but not required.
* Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical, biological sciences, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or as specified by CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489).
* Current and valid state Clinical Laboratory Scientist license required.
