Job Description
We currently have two vacancies to join our team of instructors working within the Education, Skills and Work function at HMPYOI Stoke Heath
We’re looking for a Gardens Instructor to join our gardens department team, overseeing the maintenance and development of outdoor spaces while supporting participants in gaining practical horticultural skills. This is a rewarding role for someone who enjoys working outdoors, mentoring others, and making a visible impact.
While your primary focus will be the gardens, you’ll also be expected to provide cover and contribute to other workshops within the function—such as waste management and commercial production workshops—offering variety and the chance to broaden your experience.
Key Responsibilities:
* Plan and deliver engaging horticultural activities
* Maintain garden areas to a high standard throughout the seasons
* Support and supervise prisoners in developing practical skills
* Collaborate with colleagues across departments to ensure smooth workshop operations
What We’re Looking For:
* Experience in horticulture or grounds maintenance
* A hands-on, adaptable approach to work
* Strong communication and mentoring skills
* Willingness to work across different workshop environments as needed
If you’re passionate about outdoor work and enjoy helping others grow—literally and figuratively— we’d love to hear from you
We’re also looking for a dedicated Production Instructor to lead a prison-based workshop manufacturing garden fence panels, sheds, and outdoor products to commercial standards.
Are you a hands-on professional with a passion for craftsmanship and a desire to make a real difference?
This unique role blends vocational training with commercial production—you’ll oversee a busy, purposeful environment where prisoners develop real-world skills while meeting the expectations of paying customers.
What You’ll Be Doing:
* Instruct and mentor prisoners in the production of high-quality timber garden products
* Ensure workshop output meets commercial deadlines, volumes, and quality benchmarks
* Maintain a safe, productive, and respectful working environment
* Deliver accredited training programmes in line with rehabilitation goals
* Collaborate with prison staff to support progression and positive outcomes
What You’ll Bring:
* Solid experience in wood manufacturing, joinery, or production line supervision
* Strong planning, organisation, and communication skills
* A calm, motivational approach to leadership and skills training
* A commitment to turning potential into purpose
Why join us?
This is more than just a job. It's an opportunity to help individuals develop practical skills, gain confidence, and contribute meaningfully—while ensuring production meets the demands of our valued customers.
