Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience working with a forensic patient population in high security. The post is based within a well-established Occupational Therapy service with patients with primary diagnoses of severe mental illness or personality disorder. The post offers development opportunities from band 5 with senior staff support and advice, and the VdT Model of Creative Ability is a key model of practice in the team. The hospital is a modern high-security forensic hospital focusing on innovative care and multi-professional working to reduce risk and offending behaviours. The post is suitable for a resourceful, motivated Occupational Therapist with mental health experience and a readiness to take on new challenges and development opportunities.

Main duties of the job

* Take responsibility for one ward and work with Occupational Therapy Assistants in all sessions with patients.
* Work with the Occupational Therapy service to offer groups and individual treatment goals.
* Collaborate as a highly valued member of the multi-disciplinary team.
* Engage with hospital services that meet changing patient needs, including vocational work areas, a health and fitness team, and a recovery college, alongside other Allied Health Professionals.

Person Specification

Essential

* BSc (Hons) or MSc Occupational Therapy
* HCPC Registration

Experience

* Application of core OT skills and OT process
* Multidisciplinary teamwork
* Experience of working in mental health

Desirable

* Work experience in a Health or Social Care setting
* Involvement in research and clinical audit
* Studies in Forensic Care
* Placement in a Forensic setting

Knowledge

* Understanding of the Forensic setting and how mental illness presents
* Research methodology and core OT knowledge
* Models of practice, clinical and environmental risk
* Equality and diversity, professional boundaries, and clinical governance

Desirable

* Knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g., NSF, CPA, risk assessment and risk management)
* Group work theory and practice and the VdT Model of Creative Ability

Skills

* Organisational ability and effective written and verbal communication
* Ability to build rapport with service users, carers and colleagues
* OT assessment, treatment planning, intervention and evaluation
* Problem solving, independent work and teamwork, clear decision-making and group work skills
* Computer literacy
