Job Purpose: To provide support to young people aged 16-18, assisting them in their transition to independent living. Support workers will contribute to the development of key work plans, ensuring that young people are supported in a safe and nurturing environment. Key Responsibilities: General Duties: Provide one-on-one support for young people, helping them develop the skills necessary for independent living, such as cooking, budgeting, and personal care. Support young people to engage with education, training, or employment opportunities and assist with applications when necessary. Monitor and report on young people’s progress through key work sessions, providing feedback to Home Manager and external agencies. Ensure that all work is carried out in line with the Supported Accommodation Regulations 2023 and the organisation’s policies. Adhere to health and safety guidelines at all times, ensuring that the home is safe and secure for all young people. Participate in regular training, supervision, and staff meetings to maintain professional development. Specific Duties: Young Person-Centred Support: Develop and deliver key work plans focused on young people's specific needs and goals. Encourage young people to actively participate in community activities, building social networks and improving social inclusion. Safeguarding and Well-Being: Recognise and report safeguarding concerns immediately in line with company procedures. Ensure that young people are aware of their rights and how to report concerns. Health and Safety: Ensure a safe environment by carrying out daily health and safety checks, reporting any hazards immediately. Assist young people in understanding and following fire safety and other emergency procedures. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all activities, key work sessions, and progress reports for young people. Report any concerns regarding the well-being of young people to the Home Manager and relevant professionals Person Specification Qualifications and Education NVQ Level 3 in Children and Young People or equivalent qualification (or willingness to work towards it). A good general level of education, ideally with GCSEs or equivalent. Experience Experience working with young people aged 16-18, ideally in a supported accommodation or youth work setting. Experience in supporting young people with a range of needs, including emotional and behavioural challenges. Experience working in a multi-agency environment alongside social workers, healthcare professionals, and other support teams. Knowledge and Understanding Knowledge of health and safety procedures within a residential care setting. Understanding of the current difficulties facing vulnerable young people and the barriers they face in transitioning to independent living. Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and child protection legislation. Skill and Abilities Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to maintain clear records. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and build strong relationships with young people. Strong organisational skills, able to plan and manage key work sessions effectively. Ability to manage conflict, and remain calm under pressure. Personal Attributes Empathy and patience with young people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. Resilient and able to cope with challenging behaviour in a positive and constructive manner. Flexible and willing to adapt to meet the changing needs of young people.
