Job Description:
NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.
Locum posts for Consultants in General Surgery for 12 months are required as part of an initiative to address waiting times for surgery and outpatient clinic consultations. The successful applicants will have a subspecialty interest that complements those of the department. Experience in general and emergency surgery will be essential.
The successful applicants will join the current team of 21 Consultant General Surgeons in NHSAA. The post-holders will be based either at University Hospital Crosshouse (UHC), where they will contribute to the emergency on-call rota for general surgery on a 1 in 12 basis, or at University Hospital Ayr (UHA) where the emergency rota commitment is on a 1 in 8 basis. Elective commitments may be scheduled at either of these two acute sites or at community hospital sites including East Ayrshire Community Hospital, Cumnock or Ayrshire Central Hospital, Irvine.
The department is currently trying to address service demands brought by the coronavirus pandemic, whilst trying to improve service quality, all in a way that is sustainable for both organisation and individual consultants.
UHC is a large 539-bed district general hospital opened in 1982, with regular upgrades. It provides major specialties and Ayrshire-wide services in upper GI surgery, colorectal surgery, breast surgery, pediatric surgery, and more.
UHA is a 343-bed hospital opened in 1991, with a 24-hour emergency department, emergency services for general surgery and urology, and other specialties including bariatric surgery.
The Terms and Conditions of Service follow the New Consultant Contract (Scotland) 2004. The post is offered on a 10 programmed activity basis, with possible opportunities for extra activities. Applications for part-time or job-sharing are welcomed.
Applicants must be appropriately experienced, hold full GMC registration and license, and have previous NHS or equivalent healthcare system experience at or near consultant level.
