Job Summary
Full time, Permanent
Location: York
Salary: £39,906 to £48,822 per annum
Introduction
York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York, and there has never been a more exciting time to join us. As one of the fastest-growing universities in the UK over recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade, emphasizing our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world and a more prosperous region.
The School
The School of Humanities offers a range of degree programmes across ten subject areas, and a Foundation Year in Liberal Arts. We have a diverse PGT portfolio and a rapidly growing PGR community. We are active in projects involving decolonising the curriculum, work‑related learning, and supportive and inclusive pedagogies. We have a thriving research community with early‑career and senior researchers. The School has around 80 staff and is friendly and collegiate.
The Role
As a Lecturer in Media and Film, you will contribute to the delivery and development of our programmes. You will play an active role in sustaining the School’s strong reputation for excellent teaching. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules covering screen cultures, supervising research projects, and contributing to curriculum design. You will also maintain an active research profile that complements and enhances the School’s existing strengths, and engage with university initiatives that promote creativity, diversity, and international perspectives within film and media education.
Required skills and experience
The successful candidate must possess a film and media studies background (rather than a production or practice‑based one) and hold a PhD. They should be aware of the rapidly evolving media ecology and how audiences engage with media and film in diverse ways. Knowledge and experience of AI technologies in education is welcome, as is experience of developing or delivering work‑related learning into curriculum delivery. A developing research profile in the specialist area is expected, alongside a commitment to producing outputs of recognised quality. Collegiality, commitment to student success, and eagerness to contribute to a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and academic excellence are essential.
Additional Information
We welcome applications from all qualified candidates and particularly encourage applications from women or non‑binary individuals, as these groups are currently underrepresented in this specialism. Appointments will be made on merit.
