Job overview

We are seeking a full‑time Band 3, Laboratory Technician in Microbiology on a fixed‑term contract until the end of September 2026. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to a high‑quality diagnostic service within a professional and well‑established laboratory environment.

The role operates within a structured rota, incorporating a range of shift patterns to support essential service delivery:

1. Early shifts: 08:00–16:30
2. Core shifts: 09:00–17:30
3. Late shifts: 11:30–20:00
4. Weekend working as part of an established rota

This post is well suited to individuals seeking to develop their experience within Microbiology while working as part of a dedicated and supportive team.

Main duties of the job

·To perform several biomedical activities including preparation and processing of clinical specimens for analysis, withing operating procedures and protocols.

·Loading of specimens onto clinical analysers and machine maintenance.

·To undertake some basic investigations (tests) under the supervision of Associate Practitioners and Biomedical Scientists.

·To work in all areas of Microbiology and Serology automated and non-automated bacteriology and Serology.on a rotational basis, including data entry, Waste management and Sock control.

·To work within agreed quality standards of service delivery and turnaround times under the supervision of Associate Practitioners.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·Knowledge of basic biomedical Investigations

·To be able to rotate through all areas of the Laboratories as required (Dependent on experience and training), to perform all designated duties in accordance with local working practices, to maintain high personal standards and conform to Health and Safety regulations.

· To prepare and process clinical specimens for biomedical testing, within operating procedures and protocols.

· To work within agreed quality standards of service delivery and turnaround times under the supervision of Associate Practitioners.

· To continue with personal development through academic or practical experience.

·To provide leadership and supervision, as directed, of trainee Medical Laboratory Assistants.

· Report all incidents and adverse events to senior staff.

· Demonstrate on going competency against training plans and participate positively in CPD (continuous professional development) activities.

·To observe safety regulations and attend mandatory fire, manual handling and other course as required.

· To assist in the investigations of any incidents.

· Participate in risk assessment monitoring

· To ensure that the equipment within area of work is maintained and operated as per SOP’s

· To comply with iPP policy for annual mandatory updates and have knowledge of COSHH and Lifting and Handling policies

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

5. NVQ3, or equivalent level of knowledge
6. Minimum of 3 GCSEs grades A*-C including English, Maths and a Ccience subject

Desirable criteria

7. Desire to Progress to a Degree entry qualification

Skills

Essential criteria

8. Working knowledge of the receipt and preparation of samples for biomedical testing
9. Good degree of accuracy & numeracy
10. Knowledge of computer applications in use within Pathology, particularly LIMS, Quality Management System and Procurement system
11. Good developed interpersonal and team working abilities

Desirable criteria

12. Ability to adapt efficiently to change
13. Ability to manage time to best advantage

Experience

Essential criteria

14. Experience of working in a Biomedical Science laboratory

Desirable criteria

15. Experience using Kiesta and Clinical Analysers
