Description
The City of Richmond, Department of Public Utilities - Gas Distribution Division, is seeking qualified individuals to fill a Gas Maintenance Supervisor position. The selected incumbents will supervise the workflow for approximately one (1) individual involved in the maintenance and repair of gas mains and services, and the installation of gas lines including valves and fittings.
Duties include but are not limited to
* Supervising and training one (1) individual in proper procedures for investigating and grading gas leaks.
* Responding to gas leak calls.
* Responding to and completing work orders and gas leak tickets in a timely manner.
* Making decisions to shut down gas mains to allow assigned contractor crews to make repairs as needed.
* Ensuring the assigned Gas Maintenance Pipeline Technician completes all Operation Qualification tasks.
Incumbent is an Essential employee, required to work when the City is closed due to emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions, or inclement weather. The selected candidate may be required to work 24-hour on-call, weekend and holiday duty as scheduled. May be required to respond to after-hours emergency calls utilizing an assigned take-home vehicle.
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook); GIS mapping; natural gas pipeline repair, tapping, and shutdown; leak detection equipment and City of Richmond Rules and Standards. Demonstrated skills in oral and written communication; customer service; detecting leaks; disseminating information to first responders; and reading comprehension. Demonstrated ability to supervise; prioritize; problem-solve; establish goals and objectives; and operate equipment and tools related to the assignment.
Minimum Training and Experience
* High School Diploma or GED.
* Four years of experience in natural gas/trades.
* An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
Licensing, Certifications, and/or Other Special Requirements
* A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record;
* A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire;
* A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License.
Preferred Training and Experience
* Formal or specialized training that is equivalent to one (1) year of college education;
* Possess at least three (3) years of experience in plumbing, installing, or repairing gas mains and services.

Environmental Hazards and Physical Requirements
Working conditions may include exposure to travel within and outside the City; hazards such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, gases, and poor ventilation; extreme temperatures, intense noise, and other environmental hazards. The position involves heavy work, with the ability to stand, walk, lift, grasp, reach, and perform repetitive motions. May require climbing, bending, kneeling, and exposure to hazardous materials.
