Context:
M&G plc, as a major UK listed financial services provider, is required to maintain a comprehensive and effective Risk Management Framework that meets regulatory expectations and supports well-informed decision-making across the Group. The Head of Group Risk Framework & Systems leads the design, development and continuous enhancement of the Group’s Enterprise Risk and Operational Risk Frameworks, and the Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC) system that enables their application (currently MetricStream).
This is a Groupwide leadership role that works across Business Areas, Functions and legal entities to ensure frameworks and systems are coherent, well understood and consistently embedded in day today risk management activity. The role holder plays a key part in shaping the evolution of Enterprise and NonFinancial Risk, ensuring alignment between Group strategy, regulatory expectations and operational delivery.
Success in this role requires strong stakeholder influence, deep technical expertise, and the ability to connect teams and priorities across the organisation. The role holder provides direction, challenge and support to Entity and Functional Nonfinancial Risk teams to enable effective and consistent adoption of the Group’s Risk frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead the design, maintenance and ongoing development of the Group Enterprise Risk Framework, including the Policy Governance Framework, Group Risk Management Policy, Risk Maturity Framework, Risk Taxonomy and Risk Appetite Framework.
2. Lead the enhancement of the Group Operational Risk Framework, including RCSAs, controls, issues and events management, supported by clear guidance and training.
3. Ensure developments in the Risk Frameworks and GRC system are well understood and practical so that they can be effectively embedded across Business Areas and Functions.
4. Work collaboratively with senior stakeholders, Technology, Operations, Finance and business leadership teams to ensure changes are coordinated, integrated and deliverable.
5. Provide expert input into key regulatory and strategic initiatives that influence Enterprise or Operational Risk, ensuring outcomes remain coherent and practical.
6. Bring together cross‑functional perspectives to ensure risk management practices are aligned and consistently applied across the organisation.
7. Lead the development, optimisation and governance of the Group’s GRC system, ensuring it supports high‑quality, consistent and efficient risk management.
8. Drive system adoption and effective use through engagement, training and support.
9. Manage the strategic relationship with the external GRC system provider and oversee the system roadmap, enhancements and issue resolution.
10. Work closely with Technology teams to ensure system performance, scalability and alignment to enterprise architecture and data needs.
11. Build and maintain strong, trusting relationships with senior stakeholders across the Group, ensuring transparency and alignment on framework and system developments.
12. Present key framework and system developments, insights and recommendations at relevant Boards, Executive Committees and governance forums.
13. Promote consistent and constructive collaboration between the first and second lines, supporting the development of a strong and effective risk culture.
14. Lead, coach and develop a high‑performing specialist team, setting clear expectations and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
15. Ensure people, processes and team structures remain aligned to the future needs of the Risk function.
16. Promote inclusive leadership, role‑model M&G’s expected behaviours, and ensure compliance with all relevant people policies and the Group Code of Conduct.
17. Drive improvements in ways of working, efficiency and capability across the frameworks and system functions.
Key Knowledge
18. Strong understanding of PRA/FCA regulatory expectations relating to Enterprise and Non-Financial Risk within financial services (essential).
19. Strong understanding of best practice and industry standards in relation to Enterprise and Non-Financial Risk Management Frameworks (essential).
20. Deep knowledge of enterprise GRC systems and their application in financial services (essential).
21. Broad understanding of the risk landscape facing M&G, including emerging risk themes.
22. Knowledge of the insurance and asset management sectors is beneficial but not essential.
23. Good understanding of the risk environment facing M&G plc.
Experience
24. Significant experience of designing, enhancing and embedding Enterprise and Non-Financial Risk frameworks in a regulated financial services environment (essential).
25. Strong experience interpreting and applying complex regulatory requirements in practical and commercially aware ways (essential).
26. Proven experience leading, motivating and developing a specialist team (essential).
