Job Summary
We are looking for a motivated clinical scientist to provide highly specialist respiratory and sleep diagnostics within our Department of Thoracic Medicine. The post holder will also support the management of patients with sleep disordered breathing. Preference will be given to internal Trust staff and to those with Priority or At Risk status, including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who can demonstrate recent relevant experience as required by the Person Specification.

Primary Duties & Areas of Responsibility
* Work autonomously to manage own patient caseload, including non‑medical clinics, domiciliary visits and outreach to other hospitals.
* Provide complete lung function service unsupervised, making decisions within authorisation levels and adhering to Trust policy and procedures.
* Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) based on national and professional guidelines and evidence‑based practice.
* Clinically prioritise referrals and plan workload based on clinical need.
* Assess referral forms for suitability and contraindications, liaising with clinicians as required.
* Use specialist equipment to perform complex lung function tests, including cardio‑pulmonary exercise tests.
* Interpret test results and administer bronchodilator drugs in accordance with protocols.
* Undertake sleep studies, oximetry, capnography and polysomnography.
* Review results, identify additional tests, or discuss further investigations with clinicians.
* Independently assess sleep patients, order and conduct testing before establishing CPAP treatment when required.
Person Specification
Essential
* Appropriate demonstrable experience in a clinical physiology Band 6 post or higher within an NHS Healthcare Science service.
* Demonstrable experience of teaching and training Healthcare Physiological Scientists.
* Proven knowledge of contemporary Clinical Physiology.
* First‑level degree in Clinical Physiology or related field.
* Professional body registration (AHCS, HCPC, ARTP) and ARTP Part 1 and 2.
* Skills in information and communication technology.
* Advanced respiratory and cardio‑pulmonary physiological testing, including sleep.
* Ability to prioritise workload and balance clinical and non‑clinical duties.
Desirable
* Experience negotiating and liaising with employers and professional bodies in Clinical Physiology.
* Knowledge of Clinical Physiology relevant to professional practice in a Healthcare Science Service.
* MSc in Clinical Physiology or a related area.
* The potential to lead programme or course development and management in Clinical Physiology.
